SSV WINTER CARNIVAL

YEAR 5/6 SPORT

By Simon Broecker

Primary Sports Coordinator

The excitement and anticipation had been building in our Year 5/6 sport sessions throughout this term. Our SSV (Sporting Schools Victoria) teams were selected and training programs were in full flight. This was to be our first competition carnival in the Sherbrooke/Boronia District that we have recently joined.

Finally the big day arrived Friday - June 7th. We had 3 x Volleystars teams heading to Belgrave South Primary, 2 x T-Ball teams off to Gilbert Park, 2 x Netball teams playing at Knox Regional Netball Centre, an AFL team to Kings Park and our Soccer side down at Knox Park.

The weather was kind and although a chilly morning to begin - typical for this time of year, when the sun finally did break through it was a beautiful winter day for sport and friendly competition across the various venues.

I was part of the coaching team for our AFL mixed team and it was wonderful to see the smiles on the students' faces so happy to be a part of the day. There was a great vibe in the group and I was super proud of how the group played and represented our school. I must add that they looked fantastic in our brand new AFL guernseys. It was also great to see the students make connections with kids from the other local schools. Shout out to Tom Thompson (Sawyer's Dad) who did a great job taking up ‘running’ duties getting messages out to our team.

When we returned to school similar stories surfaced and kids were buzzing talking about how their teams and day had gone. Whilst the day is all about participation, winning teams in progressive sports do have the opportunity to move on to the next round, the divisional finals. We were successful in making through to the next round in AFL, T-Ball (Team No.2) and the Netball Boys/Mixed team. Information regarding these events will come to hand soon.

I would lastly like to thank all the parents of the 5/6 students who helped get their kid(s) all organised for the day. The coaches who coached our teams and parents who were able to come cheer our kids on at the various venues. It was a wonderful day. Go BHCS!
