Camp Manyung
Last week the Year 3/4 students had a wonderful time at Camp Manyung, participating in a range of camp activities. The students were challenged to try new experiences like the giant swing, and the high ropes, and experienced a range of emotions trying things outside their normal comfort zones. A huge thank you to all the staff and parents who went on camp and ensured that it was a success.
Prep Incursion
The Prep students were very engaged in the ‘Hands On Science’ incursion where they got to do many different activities. They made a propeller-type model, using a rubber band to experiment with ‘storing’ energy when they wound it up, which they were able to take home.

Prep/1M Literacy
In Prep/1M we participate in literacy groups to develop our oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
Prep/1M and 5/6W Buddies
A creative way to spend a Friday afternoon. Buddies had to work together to create an alien out of plasticine. They needed to know what planet they were from and explain why the features they included could help them survive on this planet. Some impressive ideas developed together!
1/2J Matilda's Fever!
In between lessons, 1/2J celebrated the women’s World Cup!
3/4 Update
The Year 3/4s have been very 'outdoorsy' in the last few weeks. We enjoyed a visit to North campus and met the adorable little goats.
Last week we had a wonderful time at Camp Manyung enjoying God's beautiful creation.
Camp Manyung
On Wednesday 16th August most of the 3/4s from Bayside Christian College went to Camp Manyung, which is located on the Mornington Peninsula. When we arrived, we were greeted by welcoming staff members, and were escorted to our cabins. Once we were all settled, all of us were sorted into our activity groups, that we would stay in until the last day of our visit. We ate our snack, (which we brought along ourselves) and we prepared for the first activity of our stay.
The Giant Swing
My group, (crabs) first activity was the… THE GIANT SWING!!!!!! Only the most exciting activity of the whole camp, and we get to do it first! Some people were nauseous and anxious, but I was as cool as a cucumber. Everyone else tried to go as close to the start as possible, but I strategized and chose to go last. Do you want to know why? Because, we had to pull a rope in order to get to the top, then everyone would be tired from pulling the others, and I’d be hanging there looking at the view for ages!
When I was FINALLY AT THE TOP, I pulled the rope and went flying backwards. My stomach felt like it would spew out of my nose, but it was totally worth it. Before I knew it, lunch had come flying ‘round the corner.
The Flying Fox
After the Giant Swing it was the Flying Fox! But, then again, I was last. Anyways, it felt like a million years until it was my turn. My harness was already strapped around my body, and the instructor sent a tri-lock clip, (a clip that has three motions to unlock) and I clipped it on, just like she showed at the beginning. I climbed up the metal ladder, which led to a wooden platform and I sat down on the black swing seat. She clipped me onto the seat, and pushed me down the 120 METRE Flying Fox. I took a deep breath and felt the cold air tingle my nose because the air was numbing. Before I knew it, I was as free as a bird!
Going To Sleep
It was time to relax and wind down so we went on a short, sharp night walk to end our day. Then we snuggled up in our pyjamas and sleeping bags and snuck in a little conversation when we were actually supposed to be sleeping! Cheeky us! Some of us were afraid of the dark, so we all agreed to leave the bathroom light on during the night. The teachers were on patrol until everyone was asleep. We woke up, unaware of all the fun we were going to have later the next day.
Kitchen Garden
After we’d finished breakfast, it was time for our first activity of the day, Kitchen Garden. First we dawdled around and looked at all the herbs and spices the camp staff were growing in their garden. We also looked at the compost that ends up getting help to break down by a machine which is named ‘Oscar’ to encourage more sustainable living.
Now for the fun part. PIZZA MAKING!!! All of us were given a ball of dough which we rolled out into funky shapes that were about as thick as a two dollar coin. We spread tomato paste or some sort of gross smelling garlic paste which only the adults used because no-one else had the guts to try it. When we were all finished that step the staff member that was helping us handed out the toppings and baked them in a pizza oven. We were told not to go too close while they were cooking because the fire was really hot. Our pizzas came out of the oven and after a few minutes of cooling time they were ready for us to nibble on. Then off we went to morning tea.
Low Ropes
Our next activity was Low Ropes, where there’s no harness and the only safety gear you wear is a helmet. It’s also not too high off the ground, so if you fall it doesn’t hurt. Once we were all in groups of three, Sam, the man who was helping us put us all in different corners of the course.
Because there were no harnesses, the other two people had to be ‘spotters’, standing on either side of the ‘climber’ and putting their hands up in case they fell. After one of our team members had gone around the course, someone else would put the helmet on and get relocated to a different corner on the course. When they were done the lucky last person would have their turn. We enjoyed lunch and went to our next activity.
Tree Rolling
After that was our fifth rotation. TREE ROLLING! And no, it’s not rolling trees. Tree Rolling’s when you have a harness on and there’s an obstacle course that’s built around trees. The ‘rolling’ comes in when the ‘robot’ rolls along the cord that leads around the whole course. Once I was up and running I felt like flying, I never wanted to touch the ground ever again! Once we’d gone around the course FIVE TIMES we were allowed on the zip blindfolded once. After our turn we’d wait for everyone else to have a go.
Bike Education
Once we’d all completed afternoon tea, it was time for Bike Education! We had my near favourite activity last. I knew we’d leave on a good note! Anyways, once we all had the right sized bike, most of us did some laps around the basketball court. While some of our group learnt to ride bikes (They did a really good job.) They left with some other helpers and we went around Camp Manyung twice! My legs were as flimsy as jelly afterwards. It even hurt to walk, however, we all survived and it was totally worth it! We put our bikes back and then enjoyed some fun free time and delicious lasagna for dinner.
The Last Day
On the last day we played some fun games in our bus groups, like ‘Hanky Panky’, and a game where you had to get all of the balls off of a parachute. (Our record was like four seconds!) When we’d had all of that fun, we had delicious burgers and finished off with a few words from our teachers, and Camp Manyung's manager, Sam. We all hopped on the bus, so grateful to have had this experience.
With thanks to all the teachers who put this camp together. - Hayley 3/4K
A Day Out Of The Box!
On Thursday 17th August 5/6W got the privilege to choose what to do for the day! We sat in a circle jotting down ideas and planning the day. But we had a couple of guidelines; it had to be educational, there had to be learning involved, and it had to work around our specialist for the day, Library and LOTE.
We had a class discussion, making sure everyone was heard and the contributions we made we eventually decided on having Period 1 and 2 as PE. This was student-led. We played Netball, Basketball, Soccer, and Kickball. Period 3 we headed to the Library. Period 4 and 5 we did a cooking lesson making chocolate cake AND ham and cheese toasties.YUM!! Finally for Period 6 we had a canva lesson where we could research any person! LOTE finished off the day. The day was definitely one of the best! - Leilani and Winter 5/6W
Into the Wild Incursion
The VM students developed and ran the Into the Wild program for the 5/6 students. An epic game of capture the flag was played, with awesome places to hide! Students had to work together to come up with strategies to win the game. Camp cooking and fire building was an enjoyable experience for the students to participate in. Many have a new found love of s'mores. A great day for all involved!
5/6 Metro Excursion
As part of preparation for using public transport on City Camp, the Year 5/6 students took the train from Frankston Station to Carrum for a picnic lunch at Carrum Park. They then walked to Seaford Train Station and caught the train back to Frankston. For a number of students, this was the first time that they had ever been on a train. A day full of learning and fun!
