Food Tech Update

One of EMC’s most favourite Year 10 Design Technology subjects is our Café class. This exciting course gives students an insight and work experience in to all thing’s hospitality in our school Café – Lizzie’s Café. Students complete all aspects of running a business, including set up, food preparation and service. During their weekly Café shifts, students will experience everything that they would in the real world – cash handling, food preparation, cooking, food service, customer service and lots of barista experience! Students will experience both theory and practical elements to build on their knowledge in all thing’s food, coffee, and hospitality.

This course provides the opportunity for students to attain a Certificate 1 qualification, which are highly sought after in the hospitality field, plus a SITXFSA005 Use Hygienic Practices for Food Safety certificate, and a SITHFAB025 Prepare and a Serve Espresso Coffee certificate as well.

Students absolutely love this subject. Preparing food, and working and serving their teachers and school staff, during lunch times and recess 3 times a week, gives them immense satisfaction, and absolute pride in themselves.

I enjoy the comfortable atmosphere to learn how to use the coffee machine and other life skills that I can apply elsewhere – Izabella

I enjoyed making coffees and learning new skills, whilst being with my mates – Wyatt

I enjoy gaining qualifications for my future, whilst enjoying myself with my friends – Sophie

The students are taught how to cater for every different dietary requirement while cooking. They make vegetarian options, as well as gluten free and lactose free, plus vegan options, to cater for every different dietary need.

In this photo we have rustic Bacon & Egg pies, Corn & Leek pies and fresh warm Cinnamon Donuts. All freshly produced by the Café students, and sold by the Café students (and eaten by the Café students 😊)
