Parliament Prize
Earlier this year we promoted the ‘Parliament Prize’ to our Year 5/6 students. Each year, the Parliament of Victoria asks students across the state, from Grade 5 to Year 12, to share what they would say to parliament if they were an MP. This is a chance for students to talk about the issues that are important to them and their community. Mitcham’s very own Lee Davis prepared and recorded a 90 second ‘Members’ Statement’ about lowering healthcare, which you can read below. She did such an amazing job that she placed in the top 10 of all Victorian students in her category.
Amazing efforts, Lee!
My name is Lee Qu Davis and I am an MPM for Ringwood. Recently I have noticed healthcare prices are rising. This has to stop. Research shows the average surgery cost is between $16,000 to $20,000. How do you expect Australians to pay for this if 1.2 million Australians can’t afford an education? You may think Medicare can cover this but what if we can’t afford Medicare? Most memberships cost money but what if money is the problem? Isn’t it terrible to think people may not be able to afford the prescribed medicine or needed surgery? But recently I have come across some ideas to resolve this problem. You can help me create a fund that people in need can access with a doctor’s permission, but if this does not work there is another option, you could help me create a free membership that people can join to get a reasonable discount fitted for your surgery and medicine. Research shows 1.5 million Australians can’t afford the prescribed medicine or needed surgery but if you help me, they don’t have to worry! My message to Australia is to help me, help others.
