What's Happening in Grade 5
Reading
Throughout this term, the Year 5s have been learning about the purpose, text features and structure of explanation texts in Reading. The students have been investigating text features and the structure of sequential explanation texts. They have explored, defined and located technical terms, adjectives, adverbs and clauses in explanation texts. Students have also displayed their understandings of the texts through answering comprehension questions and writing summaries using key information.
Writing
During Term 3, the year 5s have been immersing themselves into explanation texts within writing. The students have been discovering how to implement features, structure and information correctly when writing an engaging piece. Students were very eager to discover and learn about earthquakes, volcanoes, black holes and currently bushfires for their topics. All students are very engaged and are now dedicated to working towards publishing their last explanation text.
Numeracy
The Grade 5s have been working on specific tasks to strengthen their multiplicative thinking and mental computation skills. They have been following a program which builds on their current knowledge and involves repetition of new learning to improve student’s understanding and application of number skills, particularly multiplication.
Students have also been focusing on learning about location and maps. They are also investigating more about analogue time and converting between 12 hour and 24 hour time.
Inquiry
Students have been following the Solution Fluency model for Inquiry learning, where they Define, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver and Debrief.
Students began by learning about the features of the Solar System, leading into discovering more about Earth and its surface, leading to how natural disasters are caused. They will continue to investigate how natural disasters impact living and non-living things. Students have also been working hard to incorporate this learning into their school production performances about Earthquakes and Torrential Rain/Thunderstorms.
SWPBS
Students have been working hard to develop their personalised Classroom Systems Matrix within their grades. Students have worked through the process each week to determine behaviours for each school value and how this will look in the Grade 5 classrooms. They also voted and chose rewards for their reward wheel, which a student spins after receiving 10 buzz awards in class.
