Sustainability News

We would like to thank Epping Bunnings for donating some plants for our school's National Tree Day.

We had some students from grade 6 help with planting them. Some of the plants we planted were Boronia Lutea and Blue Ridge Australian grass which are good for hedging. We are improving our lizard habitat near our beautiful big gum tree by planting some Lime Wave and Plum Bells plant and Nyalla to create coverage for the lizards.

Students enjoyed getting out in the beautiful sunshine weather and doing some gardening by digging a hole, planting and watering our plants that were donated.

Thank you to Mariam, Yalda, Stefan ,Ryan and Matthew from grade 6, you did a fantastic job.

BIODIVERSITY MONTH

September is Biodiversity month. We promote the importance of connecting with nature and for all its diversity.

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of all living things, the different plants, animals and micro-organisms and the ecosystems they form.

Why is Biodiversity important?

It provides us with many benefits such as food and medicines and provides clean air and water and fertile soils. It is very important for maintaining the ecological balance of a place.

If we don’t look after our environment around us we disturb the balance of nature  which causes an erosion of biodiversity by putting it in danger of overexploitation of natural resources and deforestation which can cause and has happened where several animal and plant species have already become extinct and millions of others are threatened.

What needs to be done for biodiversity conservation?

We can create a more sustainable future and for the conservation of nature and biodiversity. We need to preserve the diversity of species and their ecosystems. By protecting and understanding biodiversity we can protect and implement strategies for climate change, ensure food security and support communities and protect our plants and animals which are unique to Australia.

Activities you can do with your child during September for Biodiversity Month

How Biodiverse is your backyard?

Students can investigate in their own backyard or local park space to see how many different species of animals they can find. They can touch, observe and learn about urban biodiversity such as plants, bugs and count how many different birds they see.

Make a shoebox habitat

Students can make a shoebox habitat from natural materials to create a habitat for their chosen animal. They learn that different animals need different things to survive.

Build a bird's nest or feeder

By making a bird feeder, children will learn how to recycle everyday objects like a milk bottle or cans. Once they place their bird feeder in the backyard they can observe the species of birds that will come.

Create a Garden

One way to learn about different types of plants is by creating a garden. Students can learn about a variety of plants and how humans use them on a daily basis and the needs of plants. Children can also make their own greenhouse and grow flowers and vegetables.

HAVE FUN EXPLORING YOUR ENVIRONMENT!
