Year 6 News

On the 17th of August the Confirmation Candidates attended a retreat day at our school chapel. We met people from St Anthony's and other schools who were also making their Confirmation. We even got to meet and spend the day with Mrs Lynch's daughter. We did activities like Confirmation bingo, word searches filled with the Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit and many more fun enjoyable games throughout the day. After the other school left we headed to the church to practise our Confirmation with Father Brian. This day was fun and we learnt lots of new things with our friends.

In Religion this term, the Year 6’s have been researching different saints for confirmation and exploring how the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation are linked. We are using our research to create a large poster to support our oral presentation. We have all drawn a sketch of our saints and they have been displayed in our classroom and around the school. We have also been learning about the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit and have used our knowledge to better understand how our chosen saint showed the gifts and fruits and explained this by putting our information into detailed paragraphs. We have all enjoyed sketching our saint, learning about the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit and researching our saints we have chosen!

In Inquiry, the Year 6’s we have been learning about natural disasters and the effects they can have on the Earth. We have watched videos and researched natural disasters and extreme weather events such as; Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Volcanos, Droughts and Flash Floods. Each Year 6 student has created a project on their chosen disaster. I have learnt that a Earthquake can occur at anytime, a Tsunami can collect stuff which makes it bigger, a Volcano can erupt after an Earthquake or during an Earthquake, Droughts are caused by no rain for many days and even a Flash Flood can carry heavy objects like cars to be ruined. For our presentations we are creating canvas, slides and docs we are completing questions on a slideshow and writing it into our presentation. We have cue cards so when we present our oral presentations we don't read off the screen and show more pictures. Lots of us are speaking about how much we enjoyed learning about Earthquakes and Tsunamis. The reason why is because we liked watching dramatic videos and found out lots of information and enjoyed learning about the different disasters. We also liked the way we get to create our presentation in any way we wanted. All of us had so much fun learning inquiry!

In Maths, the Year 6’s have been learning a lot about decimals, length and area. This week, we’ve just recently begun learning about negative and positive integers and BODMAS. We have learnt how to find the area and perimeter of compound shapes. We’ve also learnt how to multiply and divide decimals. Most of us have found it difficult to find the perimeter of more complex shapes as we sometimes forget to add some of the sides, but we eventually got the hang of it in the end. The students in Year 6 have had a bunch of fun learning Maths!

Leadership Day

On Monday the 21st August, all Year Six leaders took a trip to St Louis. We really enjoyed talking about enthusiastic communication and doing team activities. To show good communication, we did three team games, one was about teamwork. Each person had  a role and we all worked together to create something that we can all appreciate. We also created a marble run and we had to keep the marble moving. Then we sat down in two lines and had a talk with someone from another school and had a talk and your partner had to ignore you. It was fun to see what High Schools they were going to and becoming friends with other schools. It was a very fun experience and I can't wait to go next term.
