Education in Faith

A Snapshot of RE Learning in 3/4 JH

We celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on the 15th of August. In order to learn more about the Feast of the Assumption, the students researched and found three facts about the Assumption of Mary and presented their findings on Google Slides.

While researching students also reflected on traditional and contemporary paintings of the Assumption.

We learned that the Feast of the Assumption is when Mary was taken up to heaven to be with her Son, Jesus. Catholics all over the world celebrate this day. We also discovered that there is a difference between the Assumption and the Resurrection. The Resurrection means that Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into Heaven by his own power whereas Mary’s body was taken up into Heaven by the power of her Son.

Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus left Gennesaret and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, ‘Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.’ But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him. ‘Give her what she wants,’ they said ‘because she is shouting after us.’ He said in reply, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.’ But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. ‘Lord,’ she said ‘help me.’ He replied, ‘It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ She retorted, ‘Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.’ Then Jesus answered her, ‘Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.’ And from that moment her daughter was well again.

Discussion Questions

1. What happened when the woman in today’s gospel first called out to Jesus for help?

2. Why do you think the disciples tried to turn her away?

3. How did Jesus reward her faith?

4. Have you ever heard of or seen people in need who have been turned away?

5. How should we treat people who are in need or different to us?

Let us pray that we will become more like Jesus and show kindness to all people.
