Agriculture

We have been very busy in Agriculture this term. The lambs have all been marked and are continuing to grow well. Our new calves have settled in well and the team are leading them whenever we get a chance. The new fence on the back oval is progressing well, albeit a bit slowly’ but we are all learning from mistakes made.

The Primary students have been maintaining the wicking beds and are preparing the beds for all the seeds we are growing in the Hot house. The F/1 class had fun learning, all about Rhubarb or “red sticks” as they liked to call them. Mrs Hawkins kindly cooked some up for us, so we could all get a taste.

Technology – Foods

Year 9/10 Sweet Desires Elective

Students have continued to produce high-quality products in Sweet Desires. They have been preparing and producing sweet treats using both store-bought puff pastry and then taking the challenge of making their own puff pastry to create two different products. Students made Portuguese Custard Tarts using store bought puff pastry and all achieved outstanding results. Students then took the opportunity to prepare their own puff pastry to produce their Vanilla Slice, which I believe would prove to be successful in the state’s best Vanilla Slice challenge!

Year 9/10 Food Technology Elective

Congratulations to the students in Food Technology who prepared and served a delightful afternoon tea to our visitors during Book Week. Students prepared a wonderful assortment of sweet and savoury food for our visitors to enjoy after the Book Week parade including Yo-Yo’s, Cherry Ripe Cheesecake Balls, slices, tarts, egg and lettuce ribbon sandwiches, sausage rolls and mini quiche. Students have been developing their knowledge and understanding of moist cooking methods and prepared Vegetable and Pork Steamed Buns. Students used traditional bamboo steamers with woks, and they also learnt how you can improvise in the kitchen with different equipment.

Year 8 Technology – Foods

Students have prepared food from different cultures and made a traditional beef burger healthier during their Food Technology lessons. The dishes produced included Spicy Tortilla Triangles, Nasi Goreng and a Zucchini and Beef Burger. Whilst preparing and presenting their dishes, students  perfected their presentation skills to serve their dish in an aesthetic and appealing manner. Students have been able to use new equipment in the preparation of their dishes including the salamander grill. The Year 8 students are so fortunate to have the opportunity to experience a commercial kitchen and gain real life experiences in their Food Technology classes.
