Dear Families & Friends.

What a busy week it has been to conclude Term 3.  Last Friday was an amazing excursion for our students to the Melbourne Zoo.

During STSS on Wednesday the students conducted their final experiment of the term, to make icecream!  The students observed the changes to the bag of milk/cream, sugar & vanilla essence mixture as they kept moving it in a bag of ice with sea salt in it.  A couple of groups had issues with not closing the bag properly, and reported a sweet & salty result, but on the whole the students were very satisfied by their product!  Especially the taste!

The chickens that we watched hatch throughout the term are thriving at Mrs Dourley's farm.  She has kindly provided us with photographic evidence that all is well!

Next term, the year 4 community will be taking part in the Casey Battery Blitz.  We will be collecting used batteries from household devices from the first day of next term in our classrooms.  On the 17th November our batteries will be weighed, and the winners announced the following week.  We are very motivated as we could win a pizza party for our community!  Please, over the holidays, start saving your batteries!

Our Learning:

English:

This week the students continue to read Storm Boy and explore the vocabulary.  They are learning about the Corrong National Park, these wetlands are a beautiful setting based in South Australia.  Students began researching this area of Australia to help them prepare an information report about its location, its cultural significance and the flora and fauna of the area.  This work will continue when we resume school next term.

Mathematics:

This week, the students converted money between dollars and cents then using decimals while measuring length of objects.  When we return in Term 4 we will build on our previous understanding of multiplication and division.

Integrated Studies & Social Emotional Learning:

This week we used our experiences at the zoo to make a pledge to care for our animals and ourselves.

In Social Emotional Learning the students learnt about the "No, Go, Tell" Model. In this model, if a person is in a situation where they feel unsafe, or affected by violence, they can:

  • Say No (for example, ask the person or people making them feel unsafe to stop)
  • Go if they can (for example, walk away or get offline)
  • Tell a trusted person (for example, let someone know what happened or ask for help)

Next term, Integrated Studies and Social Emotional Learning lessons will combine to focus on supporting our students with Help Seeking.

Religion:

This week the students completed their learning about the seven sacraments by completing a booklet.  When we return next term, the students will be learning about Mission Month.

On Sunday, the first of our first communion masses took place.  Congratulations to all those students.  This Sunday at 2pm, the last of our students will complete their first communion.  We congratulate them in advance!
