SHOE FUN!
At kindergarten, child-led inquiry can lead to very fulfilling moments for both teachers and students. For instance, this week the children acted on their interest in the ‘shoe shop’ game by setting up a shoe shop. Realising that we do not have enough shoes, one child said, “We can make it, like craft!” Together we traced and decorated shoeprints, triggering laughter at my “very big shoe.” Exploring real shoes, the children noticed differences in shape, size, and heels. Everyone agreed that heels make someone taller because it is sloping and higher at the end. Discussions led to new understandings: two shoes make a pair, shoes need to face the right way to fit, and shoes can be sorted by size—though “bigger” was easier to grasp than “longer.” This inquiry into shoes opened rich opportunities to explore mathematical ideas in playful, meaningful ways.
