Year 1 Excursion to Caulfield Park

Last Friday Our Year 1 students enjoyed a walk to Caulfield Park as part of their inquiry learning. They explored special places in our community and practised using maps to understand where things are located. They each had a clipboard and a booklet to complete taking note of things they could see, hear, smell and touch. It was a fun, hands-on way to connect their classroom learning with the real world! PLease enjoy some photos below!

“I learnt about the War Memorial and how special it is to us. My favourite part was when we got to play on the playground.” Abe 1A

“I liked learning about the different trees at Caulfield Park and how old they are. I loved going down the big, blue slide when we were playing!” Leo 1A

“I loved doing the scavenger hunt at Caulfield Park. My favourite part was making art with nature.” Mia 1A

“I loved making the leaf painting with nature. I also liked learning about Caulfield Park.” Ethan 1A

“I liked looking at the different plants and flowers, and sitting in the gardens. My favourite part was playing on the big playground, it was so fun!” Sienna 1A

Learning about electricity

Last Friday, Mathieu Rault (parent of Augustine 2C) led an exciting introduction to electricity for our Grade 2C & 2D students.

They learned where we find electricity in everyday life, discovered famous pioneers and their contributions, and explored how electricity is made today.

To finish, they created their own lemon battery and successfully lit up a small LED!

All the students thoroughly enjoyed the lesson with Mathieu.

What happened at Camp Forest Edge...

Juliette R-O

For camp year 3/4's went to forest edge Wednesday the 10th. In the bus I was with my whole entire class I was also with the other class 3E when we arrived we had to put are suitcases under a shelter but we had to wait to go to are cabins to unpack when we got to go to are cabins Arielle, Apolline, Chloe, Rose and Julia were in my cabin. In the cabins there were 2 top bunks 2 under bunks and 2 double bunks the girls got their own bathroom the beds had sheets on them and the colour was green and blue.

My first top activity was crate climb I was partnered up with a girl called Issy she went fisrt I was passing the blocks at one point she was about to fall but she made to stop wobble at one point she fell and she did 14 in the air! then it was my turn it was rely scary! and I got 9 in the air.

My second top activity was the riddle regain  game it was really fun my team was really good and they were fun too play with we found lots of clues we were running all over the place I had no one from my class in the team but I did have Lara from the other class we were the only girls in that team.

My third top activity was rock climbing we had Mr Chant in are group! when it was my turn I stared with the easy one because that's what the person said but when I did it I thought it was hard so I waited for the second one and when it was my turn to try the one that the person said that was hard I thought it was actually easy! something that surprised me was that I thought there was going to be much more activity's and I wasn't expecting to do archery. At the end of camp I was sad that we had to leave and I was sad because I burnt 2 fingers at damper cocking!!!!!

Last week, the 3\4s went on a three-day camp at forest edge, we had SOOOOOOOOO much fun!!! I was in a cabin with: Mika, Abbie, Olivia and two year fours called Mischa and Chloe.

My top three activities were:1. Crate climb 2. Flying fox (apparently it was the second longest in Victoria) 3. Climbing wall

Crate climb is when you have a harness, and you have to stack crates and climb them until the pile falls. (I got eleven) I think everyone knows what a flying fox is and also a climbing wall.

Before camp I thought I was going to be very homesick, but a miracle happened, I wasn't homesick!! I'm not sure why, maybe because the school talked to us, maybe because my mum talked to me, maybe because Chloe said:" If your sad just wake me up." or maybe because I was just too tired to be sad.

In the evening there were activities: on Wednesday there was a trivia, I was really tired and wanted to go to bed but we were forced to stay. On Thursday, there was a disco, that was SO much fun!!! Plus, guess what? both of my song requests played!!

It was an amazing camp, and I wish it didn't have an end. But I am sure these memories will always stay in my mind and that more great camps are to come!!!

Last week all the years 3/4 when forest edge and when we were on the bus all the kids were so happy and were buzzing to get there.

And when we arrived we put are big bags away we all had are snack and had a little play with are friends and had are lunch and after we had are activities I was with Mr. Romano and the first one we had was the scavenger hunt and I paired up with Noah. After that activity we had one more for the day it was rock climbing and I did not make it at the top at all for both of them it was really had for me and my friends. Then we get to go to are cabins and I got top buck and I was with Scarlett, Harper , Gladys , Isobel and Golda none were in my activity group but I still had fun with them.

Then for dinner  we had pasta with this really good meat and for the second night we had schnitzel and veggies it was amazing and after we had a DISCO and it was so much fun we all dance, sang and for the ticket it was glowsticks. That day my favourite activity was the flying fox and I went two time with my friend Hannah we both had fun with each other.

For the last day we had two activities left and the first we had that day was the bush walk and it was so tired and after that activity was the actuary and after we finish we when to are cabins to get are bags then we had are snake and it was a jam don nut then we left and I sleep the hall way and when we arrived at CJC we all pit up are bags and played on the playground and waited for are sibling's and went home after that and relaxed

Last week, we visited forest with the rest if the 3/4s. We had an amazing time and crafted many memories. Our camp wast at 'Forest Edge', and over the course of three days, we did 8 activities each lasting 1hr30mins. Even though it was a short amount of time, I definetly had an amazing time and would recommend it to others.  In my cabin I was with Gabriel, Mark, Noah, Ryder and I, and altogether we won the "neatest cabin" award. In the activities I very much liked my group and MY favourite activity was the crate climb, because ( I don't like to brag ) I think I beat everyone at this 3/4 camp with a high score of 19 crates! My second favourite activity was surely the flying fox, spanning over 350m and 8-10m high, and it was such a thrill when we pushed off at the start and Minh ( my partner ) and I started playing "rock paper scissors" and saw our shadows all the way down on ground below us. My third favourite activity was the camp cooking because we sat around a campfire and cooked our damper in peace away from the rush and screams on the verge of a river running across the length of the campsite with smoke blowing gently in my face.

At night, my cabin slept quietly while the cabin opposite us was a circus, but luckily, we slept through the racket. In the morning, we woke up slowly to the noise of birds singing, and we slowly but surely and started to get ready for the day ahead of us, but little did we know the day was going to be quite so busy. We went up to have breakfast and went off to our next activity, had morning tea, then next activity, then lunch and for lunch we had wraps with AMAZING chicken, then next activity, then afternoon tea, then next activity, then dinner and for dinner we had chicken schnitzel and the evening activity was the disco, which not everyone liked. And I forgot to tell you but on the first day my group "the Slightly Rotten Potatoes" won the trivia night! And I won the singing contest and Julliette in our group won the dancing contest!

On day 3 I slept a LOT better than day 2, because I think I slept 7hrs on the first night and 10-11hrs on the second night, that's 3-4 hours more sleep, which I definitely needed. Again, we woke up but this time we had to pack our bags to leave camp ( :( womp womp ). So we went up to have breakfast and went off to our 7th activity, riddle Rogaine, we had morning tea, then 8th activity which was climbing wall and then we had lunch which my group ( activity group 8 ) had to clean up after. Then we did the role and left 'Forest Edge' for good.

5/6 Soil Solutions 🌱💡💻

In our Year 5/6 integrated Science × Digital Technologies unit, the last few weeks were all about combining coding, experimenting, and data analysis.

Students used Micro:bits with soil moisture sensors to test different pots of soil, recording results, graphing their findings, and comparing them with actual water levels. The room was buzzing with collaboration & problem-solving.

What stood out most was the students’ resilience — they quickly discovered that when coding, circuits, or sensors don’t work the first time, it isn’t failure, it’s part of the scientific process. Debugging code and troubleshooting connections became opportunities for learning, persistence, and teamwork.

Most importantly, students began to see how this type of data collection links to real environmental, farming, and industry problems — from monitoring soil moisture in agriculture to making more sustainable choices for the future.

By the end, students weren’t just collecting numbers, they were making sense of their data and recognising how digital tools can help solve real-world challenges.

Alfie:

For the past 2 weeks Digi Tech and Science have been combined into one big lesson for an hour and a half. We have been working with the microbits and the crocodile clips to make a circuit that reads the moisture level of the soil. The purpose of this was to collect data, and find the average to see if plants can thrive in different levels around the school. We measured different pots that Mrs Wilson put different amounts of water inside and at the end we compared our results with the teacher’s. These were amazing lessons.

Alicia:

Last week we did a very fun activity which was using the microbits. The microbits are these small electronics that have LED lights, buttons, pins and way more. The goal of the lessons was to read the moisture level of 15 soil pots, then typing it into a spreadsheet. We were in partners or groups. This was super fun even though we did encounter some problems. It was still a great learning experience. Today we continued the activity, but this time we combined 2-3 groups together. We wrote down all the averages for all groups and then found the average of the averages. At the end we combined both classes averages and we transferred it into a graph. We learned many skills like coding, teamwork, understanding the task and the code and mostly having fun. We learned to use crocodile clips, microbits and make code. At the end it was a great double lesson and we absolutely loved it.

Avery:

Chloe:

For the last three weeks, we prepared a soil solution. To do this, we worked in groups. We needed a microbit, a soil sensor, three multicolored alligator clips (different colors), three clamps, and a sheet of paper. Then, we put everything together and placed the soil sensor in the pot. There was soil in the pot. The first week, we tested all 15 pots to see if it worked and if we understood. The second week, we did the real test and had to write down the data provided by the microbit three times. Then, you recorded the average moisture content. Then, with your group, you will join another group, and then, with your group and the other group, you will give the average you obtained for the soil solution in total.

The Microbit helps to know the purpose of water we need to put in the plants. Some plants need a lot of water and others don’t really need much water.

The thing I really enjoyed about the soil solution is when with my group we put the soil sensor in the pot. I think it was really cool to do this. I learned how to assemble things on the micro bit to make the soil solution. I’m really better using the microbit, and doing the code for the microbit. I really enjoyed it. It was very good and interesting.

Noa:

This assignment has been an interesting topic to learn about because I didn't originally know much about it. In the past few weeks we have been able to code and use a microbit as a moisture sensor and find out about the living conditions needed for plants. I had a lot of fun coding the microbit even if it didn’t go as planned. My group, Saaanvi, Liora and I, ran into a few hiccups, but we got there in the end.  We now have a proper data sheet complete with averages and a graph. To finish the sheet we had to first test pots of soil with our sensor, it would then give us a number showing how wet it was, 600 being dry and 1000 being wet. We tested each pot 3 times and used a special feature on google sheets afterward so we could get an average. We then collaborated with another group and got the mean of both our averages. Again we used a special feature and were able to put the class information/data in a graph. Overall it was a fascinating and cool learning experience.

Vova:

We worked on this for a few weeks now and in the end it was worth it. We learned about teamwork, codes and trusting people you don't know. We had some problems but in the end we got through it because mistakes are part of your life. It was really fun doing it with students who are not your friends. Codes were hard and even the teachers got it wrong too. All of the 3 weeks were AWESOME! We had to code our micro bits and look how wet the soil was. Everybody had different answers - some people had too wet and some dry. At the end we were not even close, but it was really fun and this project could help out with a lot of friendships. And that's my 3 lovely weeks!
