Mental Health & Rest

Making the Most of School Holidays

School holidays offer a much-needed break from the daily routine, not just for your child’s body, but for their mind too. After a busy term, your child’s mental health needs to have time to relax, reflect, and recharge. Here’s why and how you can help them make the most of it.

Why Rest Matters

Children process a lot of information at school—academically, socially, and emotionally. Rest is crucial for them to recover and handle any stress or anxiety. Without proper downtime, they might become irritable or overwhelmed. Holidays give them the chance to reset and return to school refreshed.

The Power of Play

Unstructured play, whether it’s outdoor games, crafts, or reading, helps children relax and express themselves. It encourages creativity and problem-solving in a fun, low-pressure environment. Try to limit screen time and promote activities that allow them to unwind.

Balanced Routine

While school holidays are a time for flexibility, some structure can still help. Keep a loose daily routine with set wake-up times and moments for relaxation, play, or family time. This balance gives them stability without feeling overly rigid.

Check In on Feelings

Holidays are a great time to talk about how your child is feeling. Ask simple questions like, “What did you enjoy most this term?” or “Is there anything that worried you?” This helps them process their thoughts and gives you insight into any concerns they may have.

Don’t Forget Sleep

Sleep is key to your child’s mental and physical wellbeing. The holidays are the perfect opportunity for your child to catch up on rest. Aim for consistency in their bedtime routine, but allow for a more relaxed schedule.

Family Connection

Spend quality time together, whether it’s through activities at home or outings. This strengthens your bond and helps your child feel secure and supported.

Final thoughts... rest is an investment

School holidays are not just a break; they’re an essential time for your child to rest, relax, and prepare for the next term. By focusing on mental and emotional recovery, you’re helping your child return to school stronger and more resilient.
