It's What is in The Heart That Matters
How do you decide whether someone would be a good leader?
What are the qualities you would look for?
That was the situation a man named Samuel faced. There is a story in the Bible where Samuel was asked by God to find the person that God had already chosen to be the leader (the king) of his people, the nation of Israel. He told Samuel to go to Bethlehem and find a man named Jesse, because God had chosen one of Jesse's sons to be king.
So Samuel went to Bethlehem and found Jesse. He discovered that Jesse had many sons with him - 7 of them! As Samuel looked at the sons, he saw lots of qualities that he thought would make one of Jesse's sons a great king.
What were those qualities? In chapel, 7 boys chose one quality (from a list) that they thought would be a quality of a great king. Brave. Wise. Handsome. Friendly. Clever. Funny. Kind. All good qualities.
We read what God said to Samuel when he thought he knew which son would make a good king.
"But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:1
The son that God had chosen was Jesse's youngest son, David. God knew David's heart was full of Love. David knew how much God loved him, and how much he loved God. King David was known as, "A man after God's own heart".
