Student Achievements

Congratulations to the following students:
Mackenzie Thomas (Year 12), who will be heading to the United States in January 2026 to join the Wichita State University Women's Division 1 Golf Team. This amazing opportunity will see Mackenzie competing on courses across Florida, Mexico and Arizona, and other states surrounding Kansas. We wish Mackenzie all the very best and can't wait to follow her success as she tees off on this exciting new chapter.
Hal Cormack (Year 11), who was named as one of two runners-up for the Lord Mayor's Prize in the Senior Section of the Young Tasmanian Writers' Prize 2025, receiving a $30 Fullers Bookshop voucher. She also won the Jane College Prose Prize for the Senior Section, earning a $200 award. These are outstanding achievements – well done, Hal! All finalists' stories will be published in Up and Coming 2025, a paperback anthology co-sponsored by Forty South Publishing and TATE.
Lucy McKenna (Year 12), Amber King, Grace Willis (Year 11) and Zoe Argyropoulos (Year 10), who are starring in Chicago – Teen Edition with the Musical Theatre Crew, currently showing at the Don Bosco Creative Arts Theatre, Guilford Young College Glenorchy, until this Saturday 13 September. Join us in celebrating our talented performers and grab a ticket to see the show via the link here (just look for the ticketing section on the home page).
Stop the press: Lucy (Year 12), who's razzle-dazzling as 'Roxie Hart', was recently featured in the Mercury with fellow cast members.
Grace Holliday (Year 10), who has enjoyed recent success in figure skating. After competing in two national competitions held in Canberra, Grace placed first in all three events she entered: a solo technical program, a solo artistic program and a duo artistic program. This is an impressive achievement, especially considering she only trains twice a month due to the absence of a skating rink in Tasmania. Well done, Grace! Your passion and dedication to your craft will take you far.
Tilly Duggan, Imogen Stewart, Lucinda Washington and Grace Coad (Year 10), who won their U16 Hockey Grand Final this week. Representing Derwent Hockey Club, these talented young athletes have done their team – and the College – proud. Sensational work! A special shout-out also to Hayley Newsham-West (Year 10), who played brilliantly for the opposing team, Canterbury. Well done to all involved!
Ella Horne, Charli Gill (Year 10), Isabel Hordern, Summer Brasnja and Lucy Holeywell (Year 8), who recently trialled for the West Ham United Football Club national camp. This initiative, founded by former WHUFC player and international coach, George Cowie, offers young athletes the chance to be selected for elite training and development.
The journey begins with a two-day state-based camp, and from there, selected players are invited to attend the national camp on the Gold Coast. From this group, a few outstanding players will be chosen to travel to the UK for a development tour, where they’ll train, compete and explore top-tier football facilities across Manchester and beyond.
We’re thrilled to announce that Ella has been selected to participate in the national camp. What a fantastic achievement! Well done, Ella.
We love celebrating our students' achievements! Share your stories and photos with us at stmarys@smc.tas.edu.au, and we'll feature your child's success in the next edition of The Fountain newsletter.
