Year 7 & 8
Mr Tom Dempers
It is hard to believe there are just nine official school weeks left for our Year 7s in their very first year of high school. This term has been buzzing with excitement as students settled into new buildings, embraced fresh routines, and rose to meet new expectations.
During our year group activity this week, students took a moment to reflect on how far they have come. Back at last year’s Year 6 Orientation Day, they each wrote down goals they hoped to achieve in their first year of high school. This week, those forms made a surprise return, giving students the chance to revisit their hopes, celebrate their progress, and set fresh goals for Year 8.
It was genuinely uplifting to see so many students thinking deeply about how to boost their grades, build stronger friendships, and continue growing in confidence and maturity. Their enthusiasm and self-awareness were nothing short of inspiring.
Our Year 8s are in a great position to wrap up the year on a high. They have put in a solid effort, and after a whirlwind of assessments, they have certainly earned a well-deserved break to recharge and refocus.
This week’s Year Group activity tackled a timely and important topic: vaping. Through an interactive module, students explored the facts, myths, and real-life impacts surrounding the use of e-cigarettes. The program was designed to empower them with the knowledge and confidence to make informed, responsible choices. They discovered what is really inside a vape, unpacked the reasons why some young people might be tempted to try it, or choose to steer clear, and examined both the short- and long-term health risks associated with vaping. It was a powerful session that sparked thoughtful conversations and gave students practical strategies to look after themselves and support their peers. You may wish to ask them about what they learnt on this important topic at home over the holidays.
This week, students from both year levels were also recognised through the presentation of Merit Certificates. These were awarded to students who achieved three or more commendations in Term 2 and Term 3, demonstrated significant improvement, or showed outstanding dedication to the St George’s Anglican Grammar School community. Each certificate reflects the values of Faith, Excellence, Justice, Respect, Integrity, and Inclusion.
Congratulations to all our worthy recipients, keep it up!
Happy Holidays everyone!
