Love Your Library

Mr Alex Hanssen

New chapter begins with brand new book club

Calling all curious minds in Years 7 to 9 – if you love stories, enjoy sharing ideas, or just want a cozy space to unwind with a good book, this is for you!

The Laurence Library is thrilled to introduce a new co-curricular Book Club designed to bring readers together in a fun, relaxed, and social setting. Whether you're a seasoned bookworm or just starting to explore the world of fiction, this club is a great way to dive into new stories and connect with others.

Here’s what to expect:

  • You will help choose the book! The City of Perth Library has a fantastic collection of Young Adult Book Club Sets – each set includes ten copies of the same novel. We’ll vote on the title that sparks the most interest and get reading!
  • Because Term Four is short and sweet, we’ll focus on one novel and a few short stories – perfect for busy schedules.
  • You will get to share your thoughtshear different perspectives, and build friendships across year levels.
  • You’ll even have a chance to meet new students and make new friends.

Why join Book Club?

Make reading a habit – with the support of your peers, it’s easier to stick with it. Plus, reading boosts your performance in English and STEM subjects. (Yes, really!) Moreover, reading a novel promotes the cognitive stamina needed to truly absorb a story. This is a great antidote to mindless scrolling of short-form content (hello, TikTok!), which can fracture attention spans. The ability to sustain attention plays a key role in learning.

Relax and recharge – reading is a great way to unwind, and discussing stories adds a meaningful social twist. It’s screen-free, stress-free, and good for your wellbeing.

Discover new genres – ever picked up a book you wouldn’t normally choose and loved it? That’s the magic of a book club. To break out of a genre rut and read more widely: “…to stimulate interest in books and reading, students need to know what possibilities lie beyond their range of experience, and to be motivated to embark on an immersive journey between the pages of a book” (Merga, 2023, p. 53). With teacher guidance and the encouragement of peers, participants can dare to explore books beyond their ‘range of experience’.

Ready to join the adventure? The Laurence Library team can’t wait to welcome you! For more info, chat with Mrs Sykiotis or check out the listing in Paperly once Term 4 co-curriculars go live. Let’s turn the page on something new this term. See you in Book Club!
