There is power in a simple conversation – something our whole school considered through RUOK? Day. Year 12 leaders handed out bright yellow wristbands andboth our Murray Street and William Street campuses were decorated with RUOK? Day banners, posters and balloons, creating a vibrant atmosphere and encouraging everyone to check in with those around them for the day.
As part of Health Week, some of our Year 10 students also dedicated their Health Stalls to raising awareness about RUOK? Day.
Other recent events in Service Learning include our PAWS sessions, which have focused on practical ways to support friends, peers and ourselves. Activities included quizzes, discussions and role plays that encouraged students to spot the signs that someone might be struggling, practise active listening, and exploring how to set healthy boundaries.
Students reflected on what it means to be a good friend, the importance of checking in, and strategies for supporting both others and themselves. Year 12s even created “worry bracelets” as a tangible reminder of the importance of care and connection.
As one of our Year 12 students reflected:
“Wearing the wristband reminded me how easy it is to just ask a mate how they’re going – and how much it can mean to them when you do.”
Let’s continue to carry this message beyond RUOK? Day – by noticing when someone might be struggling, by making time for meaningful conversations and supporting each other every day.
