Out and About

Stepping into the city

Terracotta Warriors

We have enjoyed quite a few walks to WA Museum Boola Bardip this term to see the Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality exhibition. Running until February, the exhibition marks the first time these artefacts have been loaned to Western Australia, offering a rare opportunity to view pieces from one of the world’s most significant archaeological discoveries. The Terracotta Army was created more than 2,000 years ago to guard the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

Year 9, 10 and 11 Chinese students and the Year 10 Young Historians class were captivated by the historical depth and artistic complexity of the exhibition. For the Chinese language students, it was a powerful cultural immersion, while the Young Historians gained firsthand insight into ancient imperial China and its legacy. This experience not only enriched their understanding of Chinese history but also sparked meaningful discussions about archaeology, legacy and cultural preservation.

Gone fishing

This term we ran a fishing club for Year 7s and 8s - a great way to get outside and enjoy that all that the city and the river has to offer. Fishing Club is open to all Year 7 and 8 students who want to take part. Our anglers competed for the “Golden Reel” trophy by catching and releasing the biggest catch by length. We got a few bites, but the winner was Francis Ford, who caught his first fish - a 46cm Cobbler (which I handled). Well done!

“I had a fun time casting and rigging my lines. One of the best things about fishing is the community and this club has been one of the best, everyone was helpful, and we all had fun although only one of us caught a fish.” - Cruz, Year 7

"I had a great time fishing with my friends even though we didn’t catch much it was still a fun experience it was also good to learn how other people fish!" - Milo  Year 7

Critical thinking – UWA Philosothon

A Philosothon is a collaborative event where students explore philosophical questions, focusing on big questions at the edge of science and reason. The St George’s Philosophon team proudly represented the school at the University of Western Australia, competing against several other schools in three thought-provoking rounds. The topics explored were “Is it Art,” “To Extinct or De-extinct, That Is the Question,” and the mystery round “Should Deepfakes Be Banned.”

The team showcased impressive critical thinking and collaboration throughout the event. A special congratulations to Ellie in Year 10, who earned 3rd place for her outstanding contribution.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and left inspired by the depth of discussion and the opportunity to engage with big ideas.

We will be back next year!
