FOUNDATION NEWS

Last week we had another very busy and exciting time in Foundation, with the highlight being our much anticipated Science Day!

We began the day with a fascinating talk from one of our incredible parents, Samantha’s dad, Nicholas, who is a Respiratory and Sleep Scientist. He taught us all about the lungs and how our respiratory system works. He also spoke about the importance of sleep and how scientists carry out sleep experiments. We were so engaged, asking thoughtful questions and sharing our own ideas- it was the perfect way to start the day!

Following this, we became scientists, rotating through six different experiments across the three Foundation spaces. In Miss Sargent’s room, we created a rain cloud in a jar and explored push and pull forces by building our own Rube Goldberg machines. Over in Miss Marsico’s room, we made corn dance with bicarb soda and vinegar before creating bubbling lava lamps with oil, water, and salt. In Mrs Wenckowski’s room, we investigated floating and sinking and described the properties of different materials.

It was a fabulous day full of discovery, creativity, and teamwork. We loved being scientists and came away with lots of new learning and wonderings. A huge thank you to the parent volunteers who supported us on the day, it made the experience extra special!

As this is our final week of Term 3, we’d like to thank our Foundation families for another great term. We hope you all have a safe, restful, and happy holiday, and we look forward to welcoming the children back for Term 4, their final term of their first year of school. Time has flown so quickly!

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Length
  • Reading: Non-fiction texts and their features
  • InitiaLit: Using learnt sounds to build, read and spell words and sentences, and read decodable story books (Learnt sounds: m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, c, o, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ss, ll, ff)
  • Writing: Learning to write on dotted thirds.
  • Inquiry: Chemical Science
  • Religion: Saint Carlo Acutis
  • The Resilience Project: Empathy

Here’s a reminder of some important upcoming dates for the last week of term:

  • Footy Colours Day and Hot Food - Wednesday 17th September
  • End of Term (1pm finish)- Friday, 19th September

Have a wonderful week!

The Foundation Team, Olivia Sargent, Leanne Wenckowski and Alycia Marsico

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

It has been another exciting week in Year 1/2. Last week was full of hands-on learning opportunities. We have been developing our skills in solving challenging division problems, writing entertaining narrative texts, investigating different cycles that occur on the Earth, and reflecting on the Jubilee Year of Hope.

As mathematicians, we have been exploring different strategies to solve division problems. Using hands-on materials, we have practised sharing numbers into equal groups. We have also been extending our thinking by making connections to what we already know in maths, such as skip counting, doubles, halving, and multiplication facts. These strategies are helping us to become more flexible problem solvers, and to recognise that there is often more than one way to reach an answer. It has been wonderful to see our confidence grow as we make new discoveries!

As readers and writers, we have been focusing on the skill of visualising to strengthen both our reading comprehension and our narrative writing. We have been working hard to plan and create engaging narrative pieces, using a range of language features such as sizzling starts with onomatopoeia, detailed character descriptions, and descriptive language to paint a clear picture for the reader. We have also been practising using the correct narrative structure of an orientation, build up, problem, solution and ending. These skills are helping us to write narratives that are exciting, well-organised and easy for the reader to imagine!

As inquirers, we have been investigating the different changes that happen on Earth. As thinkers, we explored the water cycle, discovering its purpose and what happens in each stage of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. We enjoyed acting out the cycle and making connections to our everyday experiences, which helped us to understand how important water is for our planet!

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy:  Fractions
  • Reading:  Inferencing and Visualising
  • Writing:  Narrative Planning and Writing
  • Spelling:  The digraph /or/ making the sound “or” as in fork.
  • Inquiry:  Changes on Earth
  • Religion:  Jubilee Year of Hope & The life of Saint Carlo Aticus

Upcoming dates:

  • Hot food day and Football colours day Wednesday, 17th September
  • End of Term 3 - Friday, 19th September
  • Start of Term 4 - Monday, 6th of October
  • Kids Helpline Incursion Next Term: Tuesday 7th of October

At St Fidelis, we value student wellbeing. As part of our commitment to student wellbeing, we will be running Kids Helpline online sessions in your child's class.

The topic they will be exploring is FriendshipThis will include an introduction to healthy friendships, exploring students’ experiences of healthy friendship moments and exploring unhealthy moments in friendships. Alongside, developing strategies when dealing with challenges in friendships.

If you do not wish for your child to attend this session, please contact your child's teacher.

YEAR 3/4 NEWS

As scientists, we have been exploring chemical reactions during our inquiry sessions. Recently, we have begun learning about variables and controls in our egg-speriments, placing 6 eggs in vinegar over 48 hours and recording how different variables affect the breakdown of the egg shell.

As active individuals, we participated in the Coles Healthy Kicks online session with football player Cody Whiteman. We learnt ways to be active, benefits of being active, ways to warm up and cool down our bodies, making smart food choices and fueling our bodies in a healthy way.

As a faith community, we have been learning about Saint Carlo Acutis, who is a modern-day saint. Born in 1991, he passed away in 2006 at the young age of 15 but was known for his care and compassion towards those in need. He was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint on September 7, 2025.

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Time (Year 3) & Decimals (Year 4)
  • Reading: Class novel on Charlotte’s Web
  • Writing: Character Analysis
  • Spelling: Term review
  • Inquiry: Science experiments using the scientific method
  • Religion: Saint Carlo Acutis

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

This week, we engaged in a Kids Helpline Session around Friendship. This is where we explored the characteristics of Friendships.  As part of this session, we learn about a Tree analogy, which is where we found out about different types of friends we can have. We learnt what healthy friendships are and what they look, feel and sound like.

A healthy friendship looks/sounds/feels….

  • Everyone is included
  • Having fun and not arguing
  • Sounds like laughter
  • Feels kind and caring

We also discussed ways of dealing with unhealthy moments in our friendships and what we could do to help us deal with this.

1. Calming down

2. Using I feel statements (Eg, I feel hurt when you run away from me, I feel confused when to)

3. Listen to them

As mathematical thinkers, we have begun our unit on Measurement. Last week, we explored length and practised converting between units such as metres, centimetres, millimetres, and kilometres. Students had fun testing their skills by measuring how far they could jump from a standing start. The challenge was to try to jump the same distance as our own height! We also measured the distance of football kicks and tennis ball throws, with some very impressive results.

This week, our focus has shifted to mass and capacity. Students are estimating and measuring the weight of everyday objects, while also learning strategies to make their estimates more accurate. These hands-on activities are helping them connect mathematical concepts to the real world in meaningful and enjoyable ways.

We hope you have a wonderful and restful break, and we look forward to seeing everyone in Term 4, ready for a very busy term and some nice weather!
