Swimming
In the past fortnight, the Year 1 students went swimming in the North Melbourne Pool. We walked to the pool from school everyday, the students were all very excited to spend time at the pool. Based on their swimming abilities, the students were then split into 5 groups. Some of them were learning the dolphin kick, some were learning breast stroke, some were learning back stroke. It was great fun and important to learn how to stay safe in the water ahead of the summer holiday! A huge thank you to all the parent helpers who took time out of their days to help us out; it wouldn’t have been so smooth without you!
Reading
Students learnt about prefixes and suffixes. We read books such as “The Sloth who came to Stay”, “The Peaches on the Beaches”, “The Tallest House on the Street” to get a good idea about what words with prefixes and suffixes look like in a sentence. They then had a go at adding prefixes and suffixes to words, and form sentences with these words. The students have enjoyed learning about them!
Numeracy
We had a math experience of setting up a Stall. Students from each Year 1 class baked a small treat with their teachers, then set up a Stall in the classroom and sold the treats to another class. The students were required to write a small business pitch to promote the products, and used their mathematical skills to count how much money they received from selling the treats. Everyone was very engaged in the process and were proud of themselves for how much money they have made!
