Learning Centre News...

ing Learning Centre One

How are we already in week 4! These weeks just seem to be flying by and before we know it we’ll be at the end of the term!

During Literacy, the students have been learning about the initial sounds in words and have been working on exploring the sounds in the beginning of various words. They have also been looking at the final sounds in words. It has been great seeing the students' sound knowledge and understanding grow throughout the week. The students explored a range of narratives and unpacked the events within the texts. The students then looked at how they can sequence the events, making sure they're in order. The students then explored various texts of the same and explored how they come in many forms. The students continued to work on their narratives and worked on the process of publishing a good piece of writing and how we have to include capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and that we re-read our writing to ensure it makes sense.

In Maths, students have been looking at collecting, sorting and graphing data. They have been exploring the ways in which we can categorise and sort different types of data and understanding how each object/ picture/ tally mark represents 1 piece of data. Students have done an amazing job and were definitely excited to eat their data (skittles) after graphing them. This week students have been looking at weight and how “hefting” is a strategy used to determine which object is heavier or lighter. Students were engaged in creating their own foil boats and were able to estimate how many will sink their boat.

Throughout Religion, the students have been exploring how we have beliefs and that they can be different for everyone. The students shared the different things that they do within their beliefs with the learning group and used their iPads to take images of the items that we use at school to explore our faith. They then created a slideshow to show all the things that they use within their faith and how it helps their faith to grow. Students then shared their powerpoints with the learning group and focused on how they can  speak in a loud, clear voice, look at the audience and stand still. Then the students shared in mass with the focus of ‘friendship’ with the year 5/6s on Friday the 27th of October.

Last Wednesday, the preps went on an excursion to Werribee - Village Cinemas to see ‘Elemental’. The students all enjoyed the experience of the cinemas and enjoyed their popcorn and drink. Students have been looking at Media Arts for Inquiry and how characters, settings and plot plays such a big role in storytelling. We would like to thank all the parents that gave up their time to come and assist us on our excursion. It was greatly appreciated!

iPads

It is important that each day students iPads are brought back each day to school and are charged and ready for the children to use for learning. We will be using them a lot in the next few weeks, so please ensure that they are bought each day

Transitioning to Year One

As we prepare to transition the students to year one we would like your support in helping them to develop their independence by allowing them to leave the learning space at the end of the day to find the person that will be collecting them. It is important that you inform your child in the morning of who and the area in which they will require to go to be picked up at the end of the day. We would also like the students to be bringing their bags in themselves in the morning as another means for us to prepare them to transition to year one. We thank you for your understanding and constant support and if you have any question please see the learning group teacher or Amanda

Playground outside LC1

It is important that at the end of the school day there are no children playing on the playground. The playground isn’t supervised by staff, and we would hate for anyone to injure or hurt themselves.

Some friendly reminders:

  • Students require their iPads for learning. Please ensure that they’re charged and brought to school each day.
  • Book bags get changed every Monday. Please make sure they’re bought back so they can be changed and returned Tuesday.
  • Summer uniform to commence after the holidays. Please ensure you have a labeled hat as we will be needing them for outside play as they will have to remain in the shade if they don’t have a hat.

Learning Centre Two

A busy few weeks in LC2 as Term 4 is well underway. Preparations have begun for the leadership process for our Year 5 students and next week, some of Year 6s are off to MacKillop for a transition morning.

MATHS

In Maths, we have been busy looking at angles for the last two weeks. Students have had the opportunity to explore, measure, name and label angles in different ways. Using the technology of their computers and iRobots, they were able to navigate and code the robots to create different angles. Coding the robots required the students to understand the degrees of angles and which direction they wanted the robot to turn. We have discovered that complementary angles are when two angles within a right angle add up to a sum of 90 degrees and a supplementary angle is when two angles add up to 180 degrees.

The images below show the mini city that 5/6 Yellow created using the 3-dimensional shapes they had constructed. They have also been investigating the statement, 'the three angles of a triangle always add to 180 degrees'.

LITERACY

The students of LC2 have been reading a book called The Lost Thing, written and illustrated by Shaun Tan. They watched videos of Shaun talking about how he designed his 'lost thing' and they also viewed the short film adaptation of the story. Scott's students had a go at designing their own lost things and also created storyboards to show what happened in the story.

RELIGION

Last week, the 5/6 students participated in a pilgrimage on the OLSC school grounds, making links to the World Youth Day liturgy, which occurred the following day. They walked prayerfully around the basketball courts, stopping to reflect on the lives of five saints; Saint John Bosco, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Carlos Acutis, Saint John Paul II and Saint Chiara Badano.

The students in 5/6 Blue have been focussing on Mary, the mother of Jesus, and have used clay to represent the relationship between Mary and Jesus, as a sculpture. They then reflected on their artworks and annotated the piece by explaining what they had represented.

YEAR 5 STUDENT LEADERSHIP MORNING

Last Friday, our very eager and enthusiastic year five students had the opportunity to begin part one of their leadership session with Chelsea, Isaac and Scott. This allowed them to start thinking about what leadership means to them, who in their life they see as a leader and how they could be a leader themselves. Throughout the day students worked in table groups and completed a variety of activities to prepare them for future leadership. Overall the session was a success, we have some very determined and passionate leaders out there! We look forward to part two where they will be introduced to leadership roles and the application process.

Learning Centre Three

We have had a busy couple of weeks in the 1/2 area. We have settled into Term 4 and hit the ground running with our learning.

This week has been very exciting with our ACMI excursion. During our Inquiry unit we have been looking at creating a story and using inspiration from our ACMI visit to plan for our stories.

This week in Reading, we have been looking at short films to tie in with our ACMI visit. We have looked at a range of short films and used our comprehension skills to answer questions about the text. In Writing, we looked at the text ‘Rainbow Bear’ by Stephen Michael King. We looked at sequencing the text and recalling our favourite parts in the story.

In Week 4, we have started looking at persuasive text and different strategies we can use to convince someone of something… including the BEST ice-cream flavour. What’s yours??

In Maths we concluded our fractions unit with a fun fairy bread activity. Students got to make some YUMMY fairy bread and then cut it up into halves, quarters and even eighths.

In Religion, we have started planning our CLASS CELEBRATION! We have talking about what we need to include in a class celebration based on what we have learnt in Religion.

Last week we also had our school Disco. Those who attended had an amazing time!

Learning Centre Four

Literacy / Inquiry

Over the last two weeks in Literacy, the 3/4 students have been In Literacy and Inquiry, students have continued investigating the structures of digital stories, and have begun sequencing their storyboards. Students have used a series of images to create a storyboard - sequencing them in a way that is interesting and then adding text to match the image. Students have also started looking at persuasive elements of movie posters and print advertisements to help them to create their own movie poster for their chosen fairytale or advertisement. Here are some examples:

Maths

In this past fortnight we have learned about how data be collected and represented in many different ways. Students learned how to ask appropriate questions to collect the relevant data, created data tables and wrote statements about the data that was collected. Students also explored the properties of 3D shapes in addition to transformation of shapes including flips, slides and turns. Here are some examples:

Religion

In Religion, LC4 has been learning about how discipleship involves taking action and the important role that a parish plays in discipleship. Kemp from St. Andrew’s Parish came to visit us to speak about the parish.

Camp

Please find attached the camp information session slideshow, if you have not yet had the chance to view it.

Excursion

Next Tuesday we will have our excursion to ACMI and the Ian Potter Centre: National Gallery of Victoria. Please remember that students should not bring their school bag - instead, they should bring only their snack, lunch and drink bottle on a small clearly labelled bag (shopping bag is perfect size). We request that it is small as there will be very limited space to store them while we are looking at exhibits.

If any parents are able to assist on the day, have a current Working With Children Check and signed the parent Code of Conduct, please email John at jdini@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au

We would still love a couple more parent helpers.
