5-8 Community News

Dear Families/Caregivers,

Welcome back after a long, long weekend.

Firstly, we wish all of our Years 5 and 6 students the best of luck with their camp in Ballarat next week. So many opportunities to create so many memories! Sovereign Hill should be loads of fun!

It's been somewhat of an 'extracurricular' week this week, with many of our students getting involved in both our Italian Day and SOLE Day celebrations. What a wonderful opportunity to showcase our school! And the learning has not stopped at all....

This week in TA, students have explored and watched one film that ties perfectly into our themes and focus for managing conflict and understanding differences: empathy and sympathy.  This week, students had a choice to watch one of the following five films: Billy Elliot, Bend it like Beckham, The Pursuit of Happiness, Glory Road and Remember the Titans.

This learning ties in beautifully with our work with The Resilience Project.  We have been blessed to have three extended TA's this week, meaning students could work across the community and explore the following themes:

* Discussing the range of strategies that could be used to cope with difficult tasks or changing situations in the film

* Defining resilience and adaptability and giving examples of how they are displayed

* Understanding that people experience situations uniquely, that people may react differently to the same situation

* Compiling a list of strategies to guide responses to challenging moments in life

* Exploring the contested meaning of concepts including freedom, justice, and rights and responsibilities and the extent they are, and should, be valued by different individuals and groups

* Comparing and evaluating two concepts of freedom

* Examining how various cultural groups are represented, by whom they are represented, and comment on the purpose and effect of these representations

* Identifying the challenges and benefits of living and working in a culturally diverse society

* Investigating why people may apply different reasoning in different circumstances

* Exploring the impact that bullying can have on an individual

* Consolidating understanding that it’s acceptable to be yourself regardless of social status and what’s portrayed in the media

Students in the 5-8 spaces continue to read their literature novels. Daily repetition develops oral literacy, word recognition and comprehension skills.

The current maths topic is coming to a close with many students making some substantial progress in geometric reasoning.

Lastly, with the weather turning up the heat and the increased UV Index, please ensure students have their hats at school. If not wearing a hat while outside, students will be asked to move to a suitable undercover area.
