Literacy & Numeracy Report

Mr Andrew Ericksen

This year Lisa Dunne (Learning Specialist), Paul Rycroft (English Domain Leader) and myself have been attending the Leading Literacy course through Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.  The purpose of this course is to develop a strategy to improve reading, writing or vocabulary.  Previously, our school attended the Leading Literacy course in 2018 and developed the Independent Reading Program which utilises the Renaissance Reading assessment tool. This program has been a part of our school’s improving NAPLAN results in Reading, which are now above the state average.

Part of our plan for improving educational outcomes in 2025 involves Literacy Classes for our incoming Year 7 students.  We plan to teach students how to decode complex language (suffixes, prefixes and root words), explicitly cover grammar, punctuation and language features and finally provide an opportunity for low-stakes writing.  We will also have the Independent Reading Program and Renaissance Reading program extended to Year 9, 10 and VM Literacy classes.  There are numerous other programs and activities we will undertake to continue to improve teaching practice and student outcomes.

For the final part of the 2024, our Year 7-10 students have undertaken PAT Testing to check in on their Reading & Maths Progress.  PAT Testing utilises adaptive testing to ensure students are given level-appropriate questions which result in a more accurate result.  Please see the attached images for an overview of our school results.

PAT Results

PAT Maths - 59 students scored in the Top 2 Bands.

PAT Reading – 92 students scored in the Top 2 Bands.

Congratulations to our students for their hard work this year.  However, this would not be possible without dedicated, professional teachers and supportive families. Enjoy the holiday break and recharge for a fantastic 2025.
