Learning and Teaching

Learning Space 1 Seniors

In LS1, the Grade 3 and 4’s have been busy studying how day and night work as part of their Inquiry Unit.  Through reading, acting, videos and dance, they have enjoyed learning that day and night occur due to the earth rotating in space and its position in relation to the sun.

They have learnt that night occurs when we are facing away from the sun but that we can see the moon as it is reflected by the sun. All this learning was consolidated in Writing where students then had to write this process in an Explanation piece of writing.  It was a great unit of work!

Learning Space 1 Juniors

This week, Learning Space 1 Junior students were very excited to participate in two swimming sessions. On Thursday, they learned about water safety, lifesaving techniques, and emergency response skills. This Lifesaving Education program is designed to empower students to make safe water-related decisions while enjoying their local waterways.

During the session, students practiced how to correctly put on a life jacket by fastening all the straps securely and ensuring it fit snugly. Additionally, they practiced holding the life jacket firmly against their chest with one hand while using the other hand to stabilise their dive into the water, ensuring a safe and controlled entry.

They also learned how to respond during an emergency situation in the water. If they encounter someone in need of help, they must remain calm and prioritise their own safety. They were taught to lie on their belly at the edge of the water to maintain stability and reduce the risk of falling in. From this position, they can extend a life jacket or a flotation device, such as a pool noodle, to the person in need, ensuring they remain safe while assisting.

The session was both enjoyable and enriching for the students, as they eagerly participated in each activity. Through this hands-on experience, they gained essential knowledge and skills, empowering them to stay safe around water and assist others responsibly during emergency situations.

GRADE 5 BIKE EDUCATION – CYCLING SKILLS AND SIMULATIONS

Week 7 – SESSION 2

The fifth graders are becoming familiar with the following aspects:

1. Reviewing the safety protocols from session 1 to ensure that the students understand the essential components.

 2. Attending to the instructions provided, such as when to accelerate and when to decelerate, while remaining mindful of the cyclists ahead and behind them.

 3. Being vigilant about pedestrians while riding, signalling their presence to those on foot, and maintaining awareness of their environment.

The students are gaining an understanding of what to anticipate while cycling, recognizing the significance of safety. It is crucial for them to attentively follow instructions to ensure that everyone can enjoy the experience. Bike education serves as a means to instil in the students the importance of prioritizing safety above all else.

A change to the initial Bike Ed Program.   Parents please note there will be no Gr 5 Bike Ed session next week. Instead students will have 2 Bike Ed sessions on Friday December 6th. Therefore bikes and helmets do not need to be brought to school next Friday November 29th.

SWIMMING

Swimming is now finished for the year. A big thank you to all the SFS staff who helped the program run smoothly. A big thanks also to the parents who assisted the Juniors in the change rooms. I would also like to thank all parents that ensured their child was ready for swimming each day. It helped the program to run smoothly and saved a lot of time for staff not needing to follow parents to bring swimming items to the school.

Swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and we hope that students have learnt how to keep themselves safe around water and have learnt new swimming skills.
