Assembly

Monday 27 October 

Our next Primary School Assembly will take place in The Farrall Centre on Monday 27 October at 2.15pm. We welcome members of our community to attend. Please remember that due to privacy concerns and to respect the photo permission choices of other families we ask you to refrain from taking photos and videos during assemblies.

Year 6 Places of Worship Excursion

Tuesday 28 October

Year 6 students will deepen and extend their 'inquiries into identity, as individuals and communities, through spiritual health and wellbeing' by visiting a number of places of worship and speaking about practices, history and beliefs in a range of contexts. Our final excursion will take place on Tuesday 28 October from 10.30am - 1.40pm. We will travel to and from Hobart Sikh Gurdwara by bus. A simple lunch provided by the Sikh community, but students are welcome to bring their own as well.

 

Students are to wear school sports uniform including their hat, and bring a packed lunch, snack and water bottle. No lunch orders. Please apply adequate sunscreen before school and pack a raincoat as required.  If a parent would like to support this excursion, please contact your child’s teacher. Our volunteers require a current Working With Vulnerable People card and must be registered as a volunteer with the School. You can find the School’s volunteer registration form at this link. 

Year 2 Excursion - Primary School Athletics Carnival

Wednesday 29 October

As part of integrating the Year 2 students to Year 3, Year 2 have been invited to attend the Year 3-6 Primary School Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 29 October. Year 2 students will leave school by bus after lunch at 10.45am and travel to the Domain Athletics Centre. On arrival, they will be able to cheer on some of the track and field events that various year levels will be participating in at this time. Year 2 students will then join in with one of the novelty events and watch the older children participate in the annual peace pull, house versus house event. We will return to school at 12.30pm. Students are required to wear their sports uniform and ensure they have packed a drink bottle and a hat. Canteen orders can still be made on this day as we will not be eating at the venue. Families are welcome to meet us at the Domain if they would like to attend.

Years 3 to 6 - Primary School Athletics Carnival

Wednesday 29 October

The Primary School Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday 29 October at the Domain Athletics Centre for all students in Years 3 to 6. Students are required to make their own way to the Domain by 9.00am, with supervision provided from 8.15am. The carnival concludes at 3.00pm. Students need to be picked up promptly by 3.10pm. Please advise the Primary School Office if your child will not be picked up by that time as they will walk back to school with class teachers. It is essential that we know which students are walking to arrange appropriate supervision. Programs will be sent home prior to the carnival. Any enquiries please contact Lisa Di Venuto.

Year 5 Excursion - MONA 

Friday 31 October

On Friday 31 October, Year 5 is travelling to the Museum of Old & New Art (MONA) as a provocation for their final Inquiry, ‘How we express ourselves’. Students will explore the central idea, “Creative thinking unlocks a world of possibilities” as they look at different elements and purposes of art, consider perspective and react to different artworks. Students will leave school at 9.30am and travel to MONA by bus, returning at approximately 3.00pm. Full sports uniform is required to be worn, as well as a hat, water bottle, morning tea and lunch. 

 

MONA has asked for the ratio to be 1 adult to 10 students. In order to facilitate these smaller groups of students exploring the museum with a supervising adult, parent helpers would be appreciated. Our volunteers require a current Working With Vulnerable People card and must be registered as a volunteer with the School. You can find the School’s volunteer registration form at this link. Year 4 Camp

Thursday 30 and Friday 31 October - Roches Beach

A camp has been organised for all Year 4 students at Orana Guide Camp at Roches Beach on Thursday 30 and Friday 31 October. Students will need to be dropped off to school with all the equipment for an overnight experience at the start of the school day and can be collected from the drive through at 2.30pm on their final day of camp. Students will be accompanied by class teachers, Outdoor Education teacher Emily Ardas and support staff. Detailed information has been included in the Operoo permission form which was sent to parents. We are looking forward to this overnight experience with both Year 4 classes. 

Year 3 - Outdoor Education Excursion and Sleepover

Thursday 30 and Friday 31 October

The Year 3 School Sleepover will take place from Thursday 30 until Friday 31 October in The Farrall Centre at school.  On Thursday morning students are to meet in classrooms with their bags and bedding, before they depart school at 9.00am to participate in an Outdoor Education day, exploring the beautiful coastline along the Alum Cliffs and Kingston Beach. This excursion is an opportunity for students to engage with their surroundings and learn valuable lessons about responsibility and the natural world. We'll be walking the Alum Cliffs track as a year group, with students arriving at Kingston Beach for lunch and some fun time on the sand. The day is designed to foster active citizenship and a sense of responsibility through activities like walking together as a group, practicing Leave No Trace principles and learning to be prepared for the outdoors. We'll also be exploring the natural and human-made systems we encounter, including local geology, ecology and history, connecting directly to the How the World Works curriculum. 

 

Students will need to wear appropriate free dress clothing for all weather conditions and sturdy shoes for walking. This should include a warm jumper (wool, polar fleece or puffer jacket), sunhat, sunscreen and a waterproof raincoat, lunch, snacks and a water bottle.   All of this equipment will need to be packed into a day backpack or their school backpack. 

 

We will return to school by bus at 4.00pm. Back on campus we will make preparations for the overnight setup and enjoy a lovely community dinner before sleeping overnight in The Farrall Centre Auditorium.  An afternoon snack and dinner will be provided for students on Thursday and breakfast and lunch the following day. Students should bring their school uniform to change into on Friday morning.

 

On Friday 31 October, Year 3 students will be participating in a number of activities, including a Race Around the World activity at school.  Detailed information about the sleepover, including a packing list has been provided to parents in the Operoo permission form, which should be completed by Friday 17 October. If you have any questions please contact your child’s class teacher:  Lis and NathanStudents may be collected on Friday afternoon from 1.45pm from their classrooms, if possible. 

Year 1 - Outdoor Education Excursion

Monday 3 November

On Monday 3 November, Year 1 will be embarking upon a coastal day to Fossil Cove and Tinderbox Reserve. The students will leave at 9.15am and return back to school at 2.30pm with class teachers and Emily Ardas, the Outdoor Education teacher, facilitating this day, providing students with the opportunity to search for, identify, ask questions and think about what fossils can tell us about the past. 

 

Students are required to wear their sports uniform and sturdy shoes for walking in. They are also to bring a backpack containing: morning tea and lunch, rain jacket, water bottle, a warm jumper, sun hat and a change of socks. Please ensure your child’s Operoo profiles are up to date and sunscreen is applied before they arrive at school. 

Marimba Mania

Friday 7 November

The Friends’ School Year 5 and 6 Marimba Ensembles will be participating in the annual Marimba Mania Concert which will take place on Friday 7 November. The event will see students from schools across Hobart combine to create an incredible, massed Marimba ensemble. We will travel to Margate Primary School Gymnasium by bus, leaving school at 8:45am sharp and returning at 1.40pm. Students should wear their Formal School Uniform and bring a packed lunch, afternoon snack, drink bottle and hat. The Public Performance will take place at 12.00pm - 12:45pm and parents and friends are welcome to attend. Please note that the concert is during the day time, there is no evening concert. This is a free event for parents and friends and no ticket is required.

Year 6 Coastal Outdoor Education Day

Monday 3 November

On Monday 3 November Year 6 students will participate in a Coastal Outdoor Education Day at Taroona Beach. This day is designed to build students’ confidence, teamwork, and understanding of Tasmania’s unique marine environments. We will be leaving school at 9.00am and returning by 3.15pm. 

 

Throughout the day, students will rotate through a series of engaging, hands-on activities including an introduction to water safety, rock pool discovery and coastal ecology, beach games and team challenges, and a coastal preparedness workshop focusing on how to dress and prepare for aquatic activities.

 

This experience supports students’ transition to Middle School Outdoor Education by developing essential skills such as risk awareness, environmental responsibility and teamwork in outdoor settings. It also deepens their appreciation for the natural coastal ecosystems of southern Tasmania, encouraging respect and care for the environment. All activities will take place under the guidance of qualified Outdoor Education staff and class teachers, with a strong focus on safety, respect, and positive participation.

 

What to Bring

Please ensure your child comes prepared for a full day outdoors by bringing:

A day pack or school bag containing:

  • Packed lunch, snacks, and a full water bottle
  • Hat and sunscreen (already applied before departure)
  • Light rain jacket or windproof jacket
  • Towel and spare change of clothes
  • Swimwear or old clothes suitable for water-based activities
  • Enclosed footwear that can get wet (e.g., reef shoes, old sneakers — no thongs)
  • Warm layer for after water activities
  • Plastic bag for wet or sandy items
  • Personal medication required during the day (e.g., EpiPen, asthma puffer)

All items should be clearly labelled. Please ensure your child is dressed for active participation, variable weather, and coastal conditions.

Kindergarten and Prep Learn to Swim Program

Years 3 and 4 Growing Up Program

Monday 3 - Friday 7 November

Growing Up – a relationships, sexuality and protective behaviours program, will be run by Family Planning Tasmania for our Years 3 and 4 students starting on Monday 3 November. There will be a parent information session for Years 3 and 4 parents on Monday 3 November at 8.30am - 9.00am in the Primary School Library. JSSATIS Athletics Carnival

Thursday 6 November

The JSSATIS Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 6 November at the Domain Athletics Centre. Students will travel by bus to and from the carnival and need to bring a packed lunch, snacks and a drink. Selected students in Year 3-6 will be notified in due course. Primary Music Showcase

Tuesday November 18 from 6pm

Please join us in The Farrall Centre at 6pm for our Primary Music Showcase, featuring our primary instrumental and vocal ensembles. It will be an evening to enjoy the result of all the hard work our primary students and music staff put in each and every week. 

 

Entry is free and all are welcome.

If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Primary School Office (phone: 6210 2228, or email: primaryschooloffice@friends.tas.edu.au) and the classroom teacher before 8.45am. We appreciate your support in this process.
