OWNING AND ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY FOR BEHAVIOUR

At Parkdale Primary School, we believe that learning to take responsibility for one’s behaviour is an important part of growing up. When children understand that their actions have an impact on others, they begin to develop self-awareness, empathy, and integrity — all essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Owning our behaviour means recognising when we’ve made a mistake, accepting the consequences, and taking steps to make things right. For example, if a student has spoken unkindly to a classmate, taking responsibility might involve offering a sincere apology and thinking about how to be more respectful next time. If a child forgets to bring the right equipment to class or doesn’t follow an instruction, accepting responsibility might mean acknowledging the mistake and working to be more organised or attentive in the future.

At school, we support students to reflect on their choices and learn from them.  We understand that being accountable for a mistake or for poor judgement can be daunting but promote the fact that honesty and accountability are always the best options.

Parents and carers can continue this message at home by:

  • Encouraging children to talk about their day and reflect on the choices they made.

  • Praising children when they own up to a mistake or show honesty, even when it’s difficult.

  • Helping them problem-solve what they could do differently next time.

By consistently reinforcing responsibility both at home and at school, we empower children to make thoughtful decisions, learn from their experiences, and develop into capable, caring individuals who take pride in doing the right thing.

LOUD SHIRT DAY

On Friday 17th October the SRC will be hosting a LOUD SHIRT DAY to raise money for charities that support children who are deaf or are hard of hearing.  We encourage students to bring along a gold coin and to wear a bright t-shirt or shirt.
