Year 1 Bulletin

Learning Intention:  To listen and identify the consonant blend /pl/

 

Whole Class Fluency Activity: 

Every learning session begins with a whole class activity aimed at building fluency. In Writing and spelling we use dictation to help the children build their literacy skills through listening to and writing sentences. It gives them practice with spelling, punctuation, and grammar in a fun, low-stress way. It also helps them use their phonics and spelling knowledge in real writing, while improving their listening, concentration and writing fluency.

 

Dictation Sentences examples: 

I see a pink plant.

The plate is on the table.

He likes to play outside.

The plum is purple.

 

The children listen to and then write 5-10 sentences on mini whiteboards. The sentences are chosen by the teachers, so they include the sound/s that are being covered during our spelling for that week.

 

Spelling Whole Class Guided Discovery 

We (the teachers) read a list of 6-8 words that have the same sound that is our focus for the lesson. Today’s focus was to listen to words with the /pl/ consonant blend.

 

Words included, plan, plot, plum, plug, plod, plate…

Questions asked include:  

What do you notice about each word? What is the same about each word? Where is the sound positioned in the word? (beginning, middle or end)

 

We say each word again and the children have a go writing each word on their whiteboard.

 

We encourage the children to practise ‘sound-talking’ each word as they write it. (saying the sound/s out loud, listening to each sound while writing)

We love including a phonics video to help the children visualise and hear the sound/s. 

 

Word List: The children are then asked to think of another word with the same sound. As a class we collate a word list using the examples from the children.

 

Individual Activity: To consolidate the /pl/ sound the children were asked to complete a worksheet consolidating the consonant blend.

Final Reflection: We finish the spelling session with some sharing and revising of our sound by reading and sound-talking our list of words.
