Waste Free Festa

Waste-Free Festa di Primavera: A Huge Success!
17/12/25
This year, BSPS proudly launched its first-ever Waste-Free Festa di Primavera, taking a big step forward in our commitment to sustainability. The aim was simple but ambitious: to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible, minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill.
A great deal of planning went into the event. Reusable plates, bowls, cutlery and tumblers were purchased or borrowed, stalls were carefully designed to reduce waste, and clear signage helped everyone sort their waste correctly on the day.
We are thrilled to share the results. With an estimated 900 people attending, the entire event generated just one small 120-litre bin of landfill waste—an incredible achievement that exceeded expectations. All other waste was successfully recycled or composted through seven separate waste streams:
- Cardboard – Yarra Depot
- Mixed paper & recycling – Council yellow bin
- Glass – Council purple bin
- Soft plastics – Private recycling collection
- Organics – Council green bin
- Compost (serviettes, corks and fairy floss sticks) – On-site composting
- Cans – Container deposit scheme – we raised $25.
The small amount of waste sent to landfill included items such as empty hair spray cans, foil photo booth backdrops, masking tape, disposable cooking gloves and cable ties. Encouragingly, many of these items can be avoided in future events, helping us reduce waste even further.
This outstanding result would not have been possible without the support of our amazing volunteers. A special thank you to the waste and washing team, particularly Francesco, for organising reusable kitchenware that can be used at future events and for helping attendees use the correct bins. We also extend our sincere thanks to the dedicated washing team—Melissa Yo, Sarah, Kate, Helen and James—who spent many hours washing dishes behind the scenes.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the Waste-Free Festa di Primavera such a positive and inspiring success for our school community .
