Year 3/4 News

Welcome to the 2026 school year. What a wonderful start our students have had well done to all our Year 3/4 students . The learning spaces are very calm and the students are happy to be at school and connecting with their teachers and peers. In the short time that we have been back, the students have wasted no time getting back into the swing of things and diving head first into their learning! They have shown a positive attitude towards learning and are engaging enthusiastically across all subject areas. We are looking forward to all of the exciting learning opportunities that we will be partaking in throughout the term and congratulate all of the students on a successful start to the 2026 school year!

Year 3
Literacy
In Literacy, the students have been introduced to PhOrMeS, a phonics program that builds on the knowledge learnt in their junior years. Specifically, the focus of this week has been the -ed suffix and the three sounds it makes, e.g. acted, filled and fixed. In Reading, Sam, Krystin, Rita and Josh have been sharing their favourite texts with the students, focusing on developing a love for reading and reading for enjoyment. The students have participated in a variety of activities based on the texts “Elmer” by David McKee, “The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be” by Joanna Gaines and “How People Learned to Fly” by Fran Hodgkins. In Writing, students have been revising the basic principles of sentence structure such as subject/predicate, simple and compound sentences, and boundary punctuation.
Maths
In Maths, students have been working on developing their number sense, demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the various ways that we can represent a number e.g. with symbols (numerals), words, objects (MAB blocks, counters, bundling sticks etc.) and pictures. Each week the students will also be participating in an additional number fluency session, where they will play a variety of maths games to increase their ability to accurately, efficiently, and flexibly manipulate numbers and choose appropriate strategies for solving problems.
Religion
In Religion, the students have already begun their preparation for Reconciliation later this term by looking at the concept of forgiveness and how this plays such an important role in our relationships with others. Specifically, students have been learning about what forgiveness looks like, including asking for forgiveness when we have upset or hurt someone as well as forgiving others when they have upset or hurt us.
Inquiry
In Inquiry/Wellbeing, students have been getting to know and build relationships with the members of their learning group and their learning group teachers through our daily Hour of Engagement. Additionally, students have revised our Positive Behaviours for Learning Matrix and how we can display the core values of OLSC: respect, responsibility and resilience.
Year 4
Literacy
In Literacy, students have enjoyed reading a variety of texts, including “The Most Boring Book Ever” by Brandon Sanderson and “The Incredible Book-Eating Boy” by Oliver Jeffers. Through these texts, students have been making strong text-to-self connections, linking events and ideas from the stories to their own experiences.
During Writing, students were given a picture prompt and encouraged to plan, write, and edit a creative writing piece of their choice. This task allowed students to explore their imagination while developing their skills in planning, sentence structure, and editing for improvement.
Maths
In Mathematics, students have been focusing on using rounding strategies to help solve addition and subtraction problems. These skills support students in estimating, checking the reasonableness of answers, and building confidence with number operations.
Religion
Through Religion, students have been learning about prayer and the different types of celebrations they and their families participate in. This has provided opportunities for students to share personal experiences and develop respect for diverse traditions.
Inquiry/Wellbeing
In Inquiry, students have begun exploring our school’s three core values, with a focus on Respect. They have been discussing what respect looks like and sounds like in different spaces around the school and how these values guide our daily actions.
