All things Mathematics...

Welcome to Term 1, 2026! My name is Rita Wang, and I am the Maths Curriculum Leader at Richmond West Primary School. Alongside this role, I also teach a lovely Grade 3/4 class (LA6) from Monday to Wednesday each week.
As the Maths Curriculum Leader, my role is to work alongside teachers across the school to plan targeted Maths learning experiences for all students. I work closely with teams on consistent and engaging Maths pedagogies that align with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and through collaboration with teachers, assessment information is used thoughtfully to better understand and support every learner. Together, we aim to build a positive Maths culture where students feel safe to make mistakes, share their thinking, and grow in confidence as mathematicians.
Learning to Learn Through Maths
In the first two weeks back at school, we started with our Learning to Learn program, which included a focus on Maths. Students engaged in different Maths games to build their mathematical thinking, while teachers collected data to better understand each student’s learning needs.
Throughout Term 1, we will continue building students’ number knowledge through hands-on activities and exploring how these skills connect to everyday life. Students will be encouraged to record and explain their thinking using drawings, models, materials, and words, and to try different strategies, recognising that there is often more than one way to solve a problem.
Students Are Supported in Their Maths Learning Through …
Our Maths Lessons
Our Instructional Model (I Do, We Do and You Do) aligns closely with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0) and helps ensure that our daily Maths lessons are thoughtfully differentiated to meet students’ readiness and learning needs.
Our Maths Groups
We place a strong emphasis on differentiation, and we support this through running Maths Groups across year levels. These groups provide valuable targeted teaching and learning time, where students work alongside peers with similar learning needs. I can’t wait to work with students across the school during Maths Groups time!
Our Maths Homework
Later this term, our Maths homework will return with hands-on, engaging tasks to enjoy at home. Every two weeks, students will receive a Maths activity designed to reinforce key concepts from school and show how Maths connects to everyday life.
I’m really looking forward to a year of learning, curiosity, and growth as we work together to support our students’ learning and wellbeing.
