Knockout Volleyball

11 of our students have been competing in the Steve Birt Memorial Shield, hoping for more success than in previous years, as evidenced by their keenness to train multiple times a week before and after school and during the holidays. Lead by captain Megan H (Year 12), who has been in the team for four straight years, the latest outfit had to face our close rivals Strathfield Girls first, who won in our previous contest last year.

Despite the obvious nerves and intimidating skills from our opponents, the team remained in the contest, and consistent sets from Connie P (Year 11) and Amanda R (Year 11) allowed for strong hits and deceptive tips. After a close first set win, the team pulled off a nail-biting tie-break to win BHGHS 2–0 Strathfield Girls.

The next game against JJ Cahill Memorial High was similarly tense. After a strong first set, fortunes turned against us, forcing us to go to a deciding set. The team demonstrated their penchant for heart attacks by going to another tie-break, but impeccable defence from our youngest member Han N (Year 9) and powerful hitting from Jasmine L (Year 10) booked our ticket to the quarter finals. BHGHS 2–1 JJ Cahill Memorial High.

The quarter finals (yet to take place at time of writing) on 22nd May should prove to be just as exhilarating. Well done team!

Mr Powell – Volleyball Coach

On Wednesday 5th of May, a group of eight BHGHS students took part in the U-14 Football NSW Futsal School Championship (St George Region). Futsal is a fast-paced indoor version of 5-a-side soccer.

The students played 6 matches against other schools from around the region:

  • NBSC Mackellar Girls Campus
  • Al Zahra College
  • St George Girls High School
  • Randwick High School
  • Jannali High School

The students won their first match against Jannali High, but could not capitalise on that promising start, following up with 2 closely fought draws, and 3 defeats against more experienced Futsal teams. However, this was the best performance by a BHGHS team in the 5 years we have been taking part in this competition, and it bodes well for next year.

The team enjoyed the experience and their attitude and effort throughout the tournament is something they and the school should be very proud of.
