Year 9/10 Learning Community Update

The start of the 2026 year has been great for the 9/10 community. The vertical curriculum is in full swing with some exciting and varied subjects being offered and students being extended with Broaden (VCE) subjects. The Year 9 students completed their last NAPLAN testing in term one, with engagement high and a well-developed level of maturity. A large amount of Year 10 students have started to complete stimulating work experience placements.
Debutante ball
For the first time, we have opened up the Debutante ball for Year 10 students and are so excited about the number of participants in 2026! Along with the 15 couples from the Year 11 cohort who will present on Friday 29 May, we have 21 couples from the year 10 cohort ready to dance the night away on Saturday 30 May.
The debutante ball is an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate our students, as well as teaching our students a variety of skills; social etiquette & conversation, presentation skills, speech crafting and classical dancing.
The commitment these students are illustrating is outstanding and we look forward to seeing all their hard work pay off later this month.
Career Planning
In the Year 9/10 Community, term 2 is about subject selection and career conversation, putting into place lose plans on ‘where to’ from school. The following events are being offered and should not be missed.
- Thursday 7 May – Year 10 Shepparton Careers Day out. The Year 10 cohort visited Shepparton to discuss local career opportunities. Highlights included the agricultural displays, digital tech displays, TAFE and University information stalls, and the hands on games from Maccas and KFC! Students represented the school admirably, asking questions and taking interest what was on display. An excellent opportunity for students to see the wide range of education and career options available in the region.
Whilst Year 10 students were away, the Year 9 cohort completed their Morrisby profile with our career’s advisor Donna Campbell; a valuable opportunity to explore their skills and attributes and the careers they may suit.
- Friday 8 May - Citi power and PowerCor presentation to our students in the hall.
- Wednesday 13 May – ADF Presentation for the Year 9/10 Community.
- Wednesday 3 June - Trade tech and fit expo in Melbourne. All Year 9/10 girls and gender diverse students are offered this opportunity to meet and discuss the variety of employment opportunities in this space.
Tuesday 23rd June – Year 9 “A Day in Industry” at St Augustine College.
- Year 10 LaTrobe Shepparton Campus & GOTAFE tour.
School for Student Leadership – Dinner Plain
The School for Student Leadership (SSL) at Dinner Plain provides a distinctive residential program for Year 9 students, centred on experiential learning, personal development, and leadership growth. Through hands‑on activities and real‑world challenges, students build essential skills in problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork.
Over the years we have been able to send a variety of students to different campuses in this program and seen incredible changes and thoughtful projects that have been brought back an implemented at Kyabram P-12 College.
This year we are able to send 6 students to the Dinner Plain Campus in term 4, and will announce the participating students soon.
Year 9/10 Community Week
In term 3, we are looking at organising a Year 9/10 community week where students will have access to a variety of activities:
- Road to Zero: Road Smart Interactive is a new, evidence based, highly interactive road safety education program that is free for all Victorian Secondary Schools. Road Smart Interactive is designed to reflect contemporary, best-practice approaches to road safety education. It utilises the latest immersive technology to guide students through a series of experiences that will engage students in thinking about how they can be part of the solution to eliminating road trauma.
- Rubicon Camp: those completing the outdoor recreation class for semester two and other members of our community will have the opportunity to attend a week-long camp. As a Department of Education Specific Purpose Outdoor School, Rubicon teaches predominantly in the context of natural environments local to each of our campuses. We do this using adventure activities within the context of student curriculum foci and learning intentions as part of their learning. Activities include bush walking, canoeing, caving, mountain biking and crock climbing.
AFL Max Camp: Students learn important leadership skills and strategies, encouraging anyone that they have the capacity to be a leader. Using AFL Max’s quarter leadership framework, students will participate in a variety of practical activities throughout AFLX:
Energy: be a better you. Goal setting and understanding your strengths.
Purpose: the why behind what you do. Active problem-solving challenges.
Connect: Great communication begins with connection. Interactive team challenges.
Perform: Setting high standards is the begging. High performance challenges.
The camp will combine physical and theoretical based learning, across the entire venue from trampolines, inflatable, interactive gaming screens and more.
Please note: pictures included are from the 2025 camp
- Work experience: during the Year 10 Careers and Community classes in Semester 1, students have been building a professional portfolio to be able to access and gain valuable work experience. This week will be a great opportunity to seek work experience placements.
