From the Art Studio:

Bringing Light into the Darkness

During Art sessions, P-2 students have been exploring how people around the world mark seasonal events and traditions. This connects with our current Unit of Inquiry Where We Are in Place and Time.

One special celebration is the Winter Solstice in June — the shortest day and longest night of the year!

Students have created beautiful and unique glowing lanterns and reflected on the idea that even a small light can brighten the darkness (literal and metaphorical). Our Lantern Walk on Friday June 19th celebrates peace, hope, kindness, and light in our hearts.

Throughout this creative learning experience, students have demonstrated the following PYP Learner Attributes:

  • Caring by thinking of others
  • Reflective by considering their actions and feelings
  • Thinkers by designing their own unique lanterns
  • Balanced by working calmly and carefully

To create their lanterns, students:

  • drew shapes, lines and patterns using oil pastels
  • painted with warm or cool liquid watercolours
  • explored how light shines through colour, with olive oil added to create a glowing effect

Our lantern walk reminds us that while one small light shines softly, many lights together can brighten the winter darkness. On the Winter Solstice, students will walk together sharing warmth, peace and kindness with our community.
