Year 6 Leadership

Social Justice

This week we are celebrating Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation Week runs from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June and is an opportunity to explore empathy, forgiveness and respect.

During Reconciliation Week, we pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise their important place in Australia’s history and culture. At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

Strengthening reconciliation involves building respectful relationships, truth-telling and promoting equity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Throughout the week, students have been engaging in discussions and learning experiences that help deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives.

Reconciliation Week reminds us that we all have a role to play in creating a more respectful, inclusive and united Australia.

STEAM Team

Hello everyone, we are the STEAM Team, and we would like to tell you about what has been happening in STEAM this term.

On Wednesdays at lunchtime, we have been running STEAM Club and a LEGO Masters competition with different challenges. One challenge involved building the tallest tower that could survive an “earthquake” by shaking the table.

Next week, in Week 7, we will be running a regular STEAM Club session with no LEGO Masters competition. Students will be able to use Bee-Bots and Spheros, as well as build and create with LEGO.

Later this term, we will also have STEAM Fest, where the whole school will have three hours dedicated to STEAM activities! It will be a very exciting day filled with hands-on challenges and creative activities. Some activities may include marshmallow and spaghetti towers, DIY slime and much more. We can’t wait!

Confirmation

Last Friday, some of the Year Six students participated in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is a special sacrament where the Bishop comes to the church and confirms that we are Catholic by placing oil on our forehead in the shape of a cross.

Before the Confirmation, we spent time researching our chosen saints. Some students presented their learning through posters, while others created slide shows to share information about their saint’s life and how they showed the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Father Andrew also asked us questions about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, including wisdom, understanding, piety and fear of the Lord.

To prepare for the Mass, we made doves with our saint’s name and our surname on them to show where we were sitting in the church. During the celebration, there was a choir that sang beautifully throughout the Mass. Father Andrew warmly welcomed everyone into the church before he shared a homily with us.

It was a very special and memorable occasion for all of the Year Six students and their families. After the Mass, all of the students who were confirmed lined up together for a group photo to celebrate this important milestone in our faith journey.
