National Schools Constitutional Convention
Being selected to attend the National Schools Constitutional Convention and establishing connections with young people as enduringly passionate as I am for politics and law, for upholding our great democracy and for a better future was so enlightening, refreshing and admirable, and laid a foundational framework for a career in the legal and political realm. The Convention made me realise that our nation is in the safe hands of emerging and unprecedented young people ambitious for political change and fearless in pursuing it.
On my visit to Parliament House and Question Time, I met the Honourable Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of Australia, Honourable Dr Jim Chalmers MP, Treasurer of Australia, Honourable Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education and Senator Fatima Payman.
The Convention deepened my understanding of the nature of the Constitution and the dichotomous limitations in our bicameral system as keynote speakers, Professor Gabrielle Appleby, Professor Emerita Anne Twomey, Professor Alan Fenna, and the Honourable Nick Minchin AO and Honourable John Faulkner, unpacked the manner the Constitution was written to entrench checks and balances on the executive power of the Federal government in order to uphold the interests of States and the role of Section 53 of the Constitution in exercising these checks and balances.
Convened at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, my fellow delegates and I deliberated on the constitutional and political implications of utilising Section 53 and engaged in soapbox sessions to debate “Should Section 53 of the Constitution be amended to prevent the Senate from blocking supply (rejecting money bills)?”, shedding light on the Whitlam government dismissal of 1975.
I also attended an Official Reception at Government House, hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, and an Official Dinner at the National Press Club of Australia, with guest speakers Amber Brock-Fabel, Founding Director of the South Australian Youth Forum and Tom McIlroy, Political Editor at Guardian Australia.
