Overview of Learning

Grade 1/2 – Term 2 Overview

Welcome to Semester Two in our Grade 1/2 classrooms! We are looking forward to a rich and engaging learning program across all areas of the curriculum.

Literacy

In Literacy, students will continue building their reading and spelling skills through our Little Learners Love Literacy program. Grade 1 students will focus on r-controlled vowel sounds and their different spellings, exploring words such as car, bird, her, and turn. Grade 2 students will investigate silent letters and a range of suffixes including -y, -ly, -ful, -less, -ness, and -ment, learning how these word endings change meaning and support vocabulary development.

In Reading and Writing, students will explore informative and persuasive texts through our Science unit, Creature Features. Students will investigate how the features of plants and animals help them survive, using texts such as The World's Most Pointless Wonderful Animals and Swifty. As the term progresses, students will identify persuasive text features and develop their ability to form and justify opinions using evidence from their learning.

Maths

In Maths, Grade 1 students will develop their understanding of skip counting and early multiplication concepts, while also exploring patterns through Algebra. They will investigate location and direction, as well as continue learning about shape and measurement.

Grade 2 students will focus on multiplication and division strategies, including doubling and halving. They will learn to tell time on an analogue clock, including o'clock, half past, quarter past, and quarter to times. Students will also explore mapping and location by identifying key features of maps and using directional language to describe movement and position.

Science

In Science, students will investigate the features of living things and how these support their survival. They will collect, sort, and organise information using tables and graphic organisers to identify patterns in data. Students will compare observations and predictions, ask questions for further investigation, and use scientific vocabulary to communicate their findings and ideas.
