Auslan Report

During this fortnight in Auslan, Grade Preps will learn about the Alphabet and Colours. When learning about the alphabet, students will learn to sign each letter which is the foundation of having the skill of fingerspelling. Grade Preps will learn to understand that fingerspelling is used for names of people and places, when there is no sign or we don’t know the sign. It is also used for clarification. When learning about Colours students will practise signing the colours as well as recognising when someone else signs them. They will complete an activity that involves drawing a rainbow and signing each colour in the rainbow. Grade Prep students will learn the following Auslan signs in this lesson:

Grade 1 students will learn about Breakfast and Transport. When learning about Breakfast, students will recognise and correctly sign the breakfast food signs taught. The learning activity will involve drawing and using Auslan signs to show their favourite breakfast. Grade 1 students will learn about Transport and the signs for different modes of travelling. They will practise recognising and signing transport signs and the learning will be supported by listening to a story. Grade 1’s will learn the following Auslan signs in these lessons:

Grades 2-6 students will focus on the topics Countries and HOLM + NMF. When learning about countries students will learn to recognise and correctly sign countries of the world, including practising fingerspelling the names of countries. Grade 5/6 students will be expected to know how to sign more countries. Students will revise and learn new HOLM and NMF (Handshape, Orientation, Location, Movement and Non Manual Features) locations. They will understand that changing the location of the sign can change the meaning of the sign. For example: changing the location for yellow can change the sign to white. Students will learn the following Auslan signs:
