 Feeling Connected at School

A strong sense of belonging helps children feel safe, confident, and ready to learn. When students feel connected to their teachers and classmates, they are more likely to engage in learning, take positive risks, and form meaningful friendships. Feeling part of the school community supports both academic growth and emotional wellbeing.

Regular attendance plays an important role in belonging. Being at school consistently helps children build friendships, feel secure in routines, and stay connected to learning and social opportunities. Students who attend regularly are more likely to feel included and part of the community.

Families play a key role in fostering belonging. At home, parents can support social and emotional skills by modelling respectful communication, encouraging empathy, guiding problem-solving, and helping children reflect on how their actions affect others. Positive conversations about school, arranging social opportunities, and supporting persistence in friendships all help children feel confident and connected.

At school, we explicitly teach skills that promote belonging. Our approach to teaching expectations through Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and the professional development our staff receive through the Berry Street Education Model guide students to develop emotional regulation, empathy, and conflict-resolution skills. Over the year we will continue to support students wellbeing and SEL (Social Emotional Learning) by implementing the Respectful Relationships program - an evidence-based initiative and educational program aimed at promoting respect, positive attitudes and behaviours.

If your child is having difficulty with friendships or feels disconnected, please contact their teacher or reach out to me. Together, we can help students develop the skills and confidence they need to form positive, lasting connections.

When families and schools work together, we create a safe, inclusive environment where every child feels they truly belong.
