Ash Wednesday Mass
This week students attended Ash Wednesday Mass, which marks the beginning of our Lenten journey of preparation for the most significant celebration in our Church Calendar – the celebration of Jesus’ rising to New Life at Easter. In the Gospel Reading, we were reminded of the importance of doing good deeds for all the right reasons.
Shrove Tuesday
Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras – which is French for ‘Fat Tuesday’ – is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Christians would traditionally eat any leftover rich foods on the day before Lent, when ‘fasting’ began. The most popular way to use up rich foods such as butter, eggs and milk was to make pancakes.
Students across the school enjoyed Pancakes for morning tea.
Project Compassion
St. Mary’s School traditionally supports Project Compassion during the Lenten season. There are donation boxes around the school. Our Year 6 Social Justice Captains will run fundraising activities during Lent.
Year 3 Reconciliation Blessing Mass
Families are warmly invited to attend a Special Blessing Mass as our children prepare to receive the sacrament of First Reconciliation.

Units of Work for Term 1
Classes have now completed their mini-units on our school theme. They explored the life and work of Mary MacKillop and reflected on how they can “never see a need without trying to do something about it.” Students examined Scripture passages that connect our theme to the teachings of Jesus.
This week in the Junior School, students will begin exploring the season of Lent and reflecting on how they can grow to be more like Jesus.
Students in Year 6 ,5 and 4 are beginning a new unit on Prayer. Throughout this unit, they will explore the five forms of prayer: Blessing, Petition, Thanksgiving, Praise, and Intercession.
The Year 3 students will focus on Reconciliation preparation.
