Celebrating Chinese New Year
Year 7 - 10
This week, our Year 7-10 Chinese classes had a wonderful time celebrating Chinese New Year, which fell on Tuesday 17 February.
Students learned about the traditional legend of ‘Nian’ and discovered why the colour red, bright lanterns and loud celebrations are such important parts of the festival. They learned about important traditions including reunion dinners, the exchange of red envelopes, spring cleaning to welcome good fortune and the symbolism of the Chinese zodiac animals.
To bring our learning to life, students took part in fun, hands-on craft activities inspired by traditional New Year decorations, further connecting language learning with authentic cultural understanding.

It has been fantastic to see students show curiosity, creativity and respect as they learned about this important celebration. Experiences like these help us not only improve our Chinese language skills but also grow out understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
We look forward to continuing to share and celebrate the Chinese culture together throughout the year at Wantirna College.
