Small Acts, Big Difference

At our school we continue to share the message of UMatter - a simple but powerful reminder that our words and actions can make a real difference in someone else’s day.

Sometimes it’s the small things that matter most. A kind word, including someone in a game, helping a classmate, or simply noticing when someone might need support can help another person feel seen, valued and cared for.

UMatter encourages our students to develop a UMattitude - an attitude of genuine gratitude that recognises and appreciates the people around us.

Just as importantly, this message is not only for the classroom. We encourage our students to carry this attitude beyond the classroom gates - into everyday life.

This might look like:

  • thanking staff when shopping or eating out
  • cheering for teammates or congratulating opponents in sport
  • showing appreciation to coaches, volunteers, and community helpers
  • thanking bus drivers, crossing supervisors or delivery workers
  • noticing when a family member has helped and saying thank you

Everyone can help support this message, including families. When adults model and encourage these small acts of appreciation, children see how powerful kindness and gratitude can be.

To help inspire these small actions, we have also included a March Action for Happiness calendar with simple daily ideas that encourage kindness, gratitude, and connection.

Together, we can continue building a culture where everyone remembers an important message: You Matter.
