Year Four

This term, our class has been enjoying the rich and imaginative novel The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.

The story follows Despereaux Tilling, a small mouse with unusually large ears and an even larger heart. Unlike the other mice, Despereaux is drawn to music, stories and light - and he forms an unexpected connection with Princess Pea. Alongside Despereaux, we meet Roscuro, a rat who longs to leave the darkness of the dungeon and experience light and beauty, and Miggery Sow, a mistreated servant girl who dreams of becoming a princess. Each of these characters brings complexity to the story, allowing students to explore themes of courage, light and dark.

In our Text Study learning, we have been diving deeply into the text through a range of comprehension and analytical skills. Students have been practising inferencing, using clues from the text to understand what characters may be thinking or feeling, even when it is not directly stated.

We have also been analysing characters in detail - examining their feelings, actions, physical appearance and character traits - and discussing how these elements shape the choices they make throughout the story.

A key focus has been exploring symbolism, particularly the use of colour and the contrast between light and dark. Students have considered how light often represents hope, goodness and forgiveness, while darkness can symbolise fear, loneliness or evil.

Throughout our reading, we have been building strong vocabulary knowledge, carefully unpacking unfamiliar words and exploring how precise language enhances meaning.

Students have also been developing their own character descriptions, drawing on evidence from the text to write detailed and thoughtful portrayals.

It has been wonderful to see students engaging so thoughtfully with this powerful and layered novel, and we look forward to continuing our journey through the story together.
