Year 6 Leaders 2026

Congratulations to all the Year 5 students who presented their Leadership Speech to staff, parents and students last week. All candidates spoke confidently and provided excellent examples of how they would conduct themselves in the various roles they applied for, and some changes that they would make to improve our school.

Year 6 Graduation

On Monday 15 December, we will celebrate our graduating class of 2025 at our Graduation Ceremony. The evening will commence at 6.30pm in the Hall for staff, students and their parents/guardians. 

A reminder of the following:

• Families leaving Sacred Heart at the end of 2025 will be farewelled by the community on Tuesday 16 December at the conclusion of the 9.15am Mass in the Church.
• The Year 6 End of Year Assembly will be on Tuesday 16 December at 11.15am in the MPR.

Swimming Program at MLC

The Swimming Program at MLC commences next Monday 8 December. A reminder that students will need to wear their sports uniform each day to school (and can wear their bathers underneath). They will need to bring a separate bag to school with them each day.

Bathers (or change of underwear if wearing bathers to school under their uniform).

Please ensure all items are clearly labelled along with their sports uniform worn on the day.

Parent Helpers at Swimming Program (Monday 8 - Friday 12 December) 

As with any school activity/event, we greatly appreciate our parent helpers. Thank you to the many parents who will volunteer to help out at our upcoming Swimming program. To assist everyone during our Swimming program, please read the reminders below. Thank you for your support with these matters. 

• As per our Parent/Guardian/Carer Code of Conduct that all parents signed at the beginning of the year, it is expected that every parent/guardian/carer will: abide by all health and safety rules and procedures operating within the school and other locations at which they may visit while representing the school. 
• As previously outlined in the 'Swimming Lessons at MLC 2025' Operoo form, we will require some parent helpers for the younger children to help get changed. 
• Classroom teachers have already arranged this with parents and have shared the roster for next week. 
• Thank you to parents who have offered their assistance and supplied the necessary child safety documents to assist in the changerooms. If assisting in the changerooms, please ensure that you are with another adult, e.g. teacher/staff member and or parent during these times.
• Please notify the Classroom teacher if you can longer assist on the day.
• As the MLC Swimming Pool space is quite small and seating is limited, we request that all parents only attend the MLC pool on your rostered day on the timetable. 
• No food or drink is allowed within the MLC pool and pool deck areas. 

• If wishing to give out 'special treats' to children or class/year levels during Swimming week, we ask that this be done when the children return to school, within the classroom and/or outside within the school grounds, not at the MLC Pool or when walking back to school.

End of Year Thanksgiving Mass: Tuesday 16 December at 9.15am

Please save the date for our end of year celebration at our beautiful Parish Church. To be immediately followed by our Light of Leadership ceremony. We will farewell our Year 6 students and all other students and families leaving Sacred Heart.

Changes to Operoo in 2026

Operoo has now ended! As previously mentioned, Sacred Heart will be using the nForma Parent Portal to access student medical information and send permissions for excursions and camps. Once the transition from Operoo to nForma has happened (mid January), you will be able to view your child's profile in the nForma app that you have already downloaded. You will also be able to update contact and emergency details. If you have not downloaded the nForma Parent Portal, please use the links below to get started. 

Semester 2 Reports

Staff are currently working on assessment and reporting as they gather evidence to support students' academic achievement against the Victorian Curriculum and the Religious Education Framework.

Your child's achievement against the Victorian Curriculum and the Religious Education Framework for the semester is rated against a five point descriptor scale, displayed by a Dot, which identifies whether your child is:

• Well above standard

• Above standard

• At standard

• Below standard

• Well below standard

   

Not all strands of a Learning Area are reported on each semester. If a child is showing the same result at the end of Semester 2 compared to the previous report, this does not mean that progress has not occurred. Progress is not always even and each child has his/her own rate of learning. Each increment represents six month's growth and your child may still be progressing, but consolidating what has been learnt previously e.g. your child may have shown five months growth, but not moved up an increment.

The Student Report format will contain a personalised 'Comment on Student Learning' which may refer to the student's academic achievement, personal and interpersonal skills, thinking skills, organisational skills as well as behaviour and effort.

The Student Report will provide you with an overview of your child's achievements and assist in strengthening our family-school partnership. 

As per the Semester 1 Report, please read through some of the changes that will appear in this Report

• There have been some changes made to the Student Report format. The Mathematics 2.0 Curriculum will have its own page and the progression dot point will only appear on this page.

• The English and Mathematics 2.0 pages will also feature a Work Habits Table indicating how your child's Effort and Behaviour is progressing in these learning areas.

• The Specialists (Visual Art, Performing Arts, Health and Physical Education and Chinese) will also include the Work Habits Table above.

   

Your child's Semester 2 Report can be accessed through the nForma Parent Portal. We will send notification via Audiri, when the Reports are available to view on Tuesday 16 December.

Assessment days to begin 2026 school year

As was the case this year, to help minimise interruptions to the beginning of the school year, all assessment of children will occur in 1 hour time slots (Year 1 - 6) or 30 minute time slots (Prep) on either Wednesday 28 January or Thursday 29 January, before ALL children begin together on Friday 30 January. Over these first two days, each child will come into school for their relevant assessment time slot, with a small group of other children from their class. Please note, that Prep children will be required to attend an additional 30 minute assessment time slot, on a Wednesday (Prep free day), early in Term One. 

During this time, children will meet their new classroom teacher and participate in the usual literacy/numeracy assessment that occurs at the start of each school year. Parents will be able to book their child(ren) in for a relevant time slot that is convenient for your family situation (via the usual School Interviews online booking site). This link will be provided to parents in the final week of the school year. 

The following assessments will form part of our planned assessment day(s)

• Mathematics Online Interview (MOI) - Prep and Year 1 students complete the Mathematics Online Interview assessment in Term 1 each year. The Mathematics Online Interview (MOI) is an online tool for assessing the mathematical understanding of students in the early years of schooling. The Interview assesses students’ knowledge, skills and strategies in relation to key ‘growth points’ in the strands of Number and Algebra.
• DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) - DIBELS is a set of procedures and measures for assessing literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic knowledge, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. By giving students a number of quick tests, this will allow teachers to have data to identify students who need additional assistance and later monitor the effectiveness of intervention strategies. All Prep-6 students will complete this assessment.
• BURT Word Test - This is a standardised reading test that is widely used to determine a child's reading skills. The test provides a list of 110 words, and a child attempts to read as many words as possible. The words increase in difficulty as you progress. All Year 2-6 students will complete this assessment.
• TORCH (Tests of Reading Comprehension) - is a set of twelve reading tests designed to assist teachers of students from Year 3-6 in their assessment of students’ reading comrpehesnion skills. TORCH provides an estimate of a student’s level of reading comprehension achievement. That is, information about the student’s performance on the sets of comprehsenion tasks from the TORCH tests.

• Reading Running Records - ​A Running Record is an assessment tool which provides an insight into a student’s reading as it is happening. A Running Record provides information on the following:

  -a score of word reading accuracy

  -an analysis of a reader's errors and self-corrections

  -an analysis of the reading strategies used

   

  Using a series of established conventions, the teacher can quickly and accurately record what the reader says as they read a text or section of a text aloud. After the reading, the teacher completes an analysis. All Year 2-6 students will complete this assessment.

   

• Essential Assesment - Students will be assigned individual assessment tasks and activities throughout the year that aim to support their mathematical knowledge and key understandings of concepts taught. Literacy and Reading activities are also accessed for teachers and students to work through systematically. All students in Year 1-6 will complete assessments in Literacy and Numeracy.
