Reflection

The Season of Advent

This week marks the beginning of Advent, a time for reflection, anticipation, and hope. Advent invites us to pause and consider its meaning, especially the symbolism of the Advent wreath and its candles.

The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning 'coming' or 'arrival.'

In the Catholic tradition, Advent encompasses the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Like Lent, it is a season of preparation and turning away from sin.

Yet, unlike Lent, Advent is filled with joyful expectation as we prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ, our Saviour.

This is what makes Advent so special: it reminds us that Christmas is not just a historical event but a celebration of Christ’s presence in our world today.

The question we are invited to ponder is: How does Christ come into the world now?

Through the Eucharist, Baptism, Confirmation, and the other sacraments, we become part of the living Body of Christ.

For Catholics, every celebration of the Eucharist is like a 'little Christmas.'

During Advent, we prepare for Christ’s coming just as the Israelites awaited the Messiah, while also looking forward to His final coming at the end of time.

Both themes are reflected in the Church’s readings throughout this season.

The Four Advent Candles

Jesus is the Light of the World and He calls us to share His light. During Advent, often the darkest time of the year, the Advent wreath shines as a symbol of hope.

As St Francis of Assisi said:

'All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.'

The wreath traditionally holds four candles, three purple and one pink representing hope, peace, joy, and love. One candle is lit each Sunday, gradually brightening the darkness as Christmas approaches.

Some wreaths include a fifth white candle, the 'Christ Candle,' lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to signify that Jesus is with us.

Prayer for Advent

Almighty God,

we begin this Advent Season as an ‘Advent People’ people of hope,

ready to do Your will.

Let Your blessing come upon us as we light our Advent wreath.

May it turn our hearts to You in the days ahead.

Grant us the peace and joy we long for, as we await the coming of Your Son with patient hearts.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Come, Lord Jesus,

Come, Lord Jesus,

Come, Lord Jesus!

Amen.

A profound and moving White Ribbon Assembly

On Wednesday, 26 November, our 2026 Student Leaders led a deeply significant White Ribbon Assembly, reaffirming our commitment to supporting women and taking a stand against domestic violence. This event was not only a moment of reflection but also a powerful call to action for our entire community.

We were privileged to welcome student leaders from Mercy Catholic College, who enriched the assembly with a keynote address delivered by their College Captains. Their words were both confronting and enlightening, shedding light on the harsh realities and challenges faced by women and individuals affected by domestic violence. Through their honesty and courage, they offered insights that were both sobering and inspiring.

What resonated most were their messages of hope, encouragement, and advocacy reminding us that change begins with each of us. Their voices left a lasting impression on the St Pius X community, reinforcing the importance of solidarity and respect.

As highlighted during the assembly, our responsibility as young men extends beyond words. It is reflected in how we speak about women, how we treat women, and how we engage with them in our daily lives. Every interaction matters, and every choice contributes to creating a culture of respect and equality.

Thank you to both the St Pius X and Mercy Catholic College student leaders.

Together, let us commit to being agents of change - champions of dignity, compassion, and justice.

Year 11 formal classes finish on Friday 28 November

This Friday, 28 November, marks the end of the academic year for our Year 11 students a milestone in their journey as they have embraced the challenges and responsibilities of senior study. It has been a year of growth and learning, and we commend them for their dedication.

On Friday, students will follow their normal schedule for Periods 1–4 before joining together for a special closing celebration. We will gather for the Eucharist and then share in a farewell event for Mr Pawlak, a cherished member of our community.

This occasion is truly significant. As a former student and long-serving teacher, Mr Pawlak has been part of St Pius X College for over 48 years. His contribution and commitment have left an indelible mark on our College, a legacy that will be hard to replace. We thank him for his extraordinary service and wish him every success as he embarks on a new chapter.

Message to Year 11 Students.  As we close the academic year, I hope you have achieved the goals you set for 2025. Now is the time to rest and recharge before we begin the final stretch toward your HSC examinations.

Your canvas is only half complete - the next phase of your journey will bring both challenges and triumphs. There will be highs and lows but remember: staying united as one will be the key to reaching your ultimate goals in 2026.

Outstanding Year 10 Immersion Experiences

The feedback from our Year 10 Immersions has been nothing short of inspiring! Students who participated in the Greater Sydney day immersion demonstrated incredible maturity and empathy as they reflected on the daily challenges faced by so many in our community. Their insights reveal just how deeply meaningful this experience has been for their personal growth.

Although our weeklong immersions have not yet returned, reports from those programs show the same spirit of connection and learning. Teachers have shared stories of powerful encounters with the communities that will stay with them for years to come.

These immersions are more than activities, they are transformative experiences that open hearts and minds. My hope and prayer is that these encounters ignite a lifelong commitment in our students to seek opportunities to serve others not only in 2026 but throughout their lives.

Farewell to Mr Pawlak

It is with deep gratitude and admiration that we acknowledge the retirement of Mr Pawlak, a loyal and valued member of the St Pius X College community for more than five decades. His journey with us began in the late 1960s as a student, and continued through an extraordinary career as a dedicated staff member. Few individuals have left such an indelible mark on the life and spirit of our College.

Throughout his time here, Mr Pawlak has influenced the lives of countless young men, shaping not only their education but their character. His legendary status will forever echo through the halls of St Pius X, a testament to his unwavering commitment and passion for teaching.

Last week, we gathered to celebrate Mr Pawlak’s remarkable contribution at a special farewell event attended by current staff, former colleagues, and past students. It was a fitting tribute to a man whose impact spans generations. During the gathering, Mr Tony Cunneen, a current staff member, delivered a heartfelt speech honouring Mr Pawlak’s legacy and his extraordinary service to the College.

Attached is Tony's address for Mark.

Farewell to Ms Janes

Ms Donna Janes has been a loyal and valued member of the St Pius X College community since 1995. During her time with us, she has contributed immensely to the life of the College through her dedication, professionalism, and passion for education.

Recently, while on leave, Ms Janes informed us that she has accepted a new position at a school closer to home. This is a wonderful opportunity for her to continue developing professionally and to share her expertise with another community.

Throughout her time at St Pius X, Ms Janes has held numerous roles, including Careers Advisor, Senior Studies Coordinator, and Pastoral Leader. In these leadership positions, she has had a profound and positive influence on countless students. Her calm and reassuring presence has supported both staff and students, fostering an environment of care and respect.

Ms Janes’s passion for art has been a defining feature of her work. She has been instrumental in creating spaces where students can freely express themselves and explore their creativity. Her commitment has inspired generations of students to succeed not only in art but in their chosen pathways.

While we will miss her expertise and her love for the arts, we will also miss her warmth, kindness, and the encouragement she has given to so many.

We wish Ms Janes every success as she embarks on this next stage of her career. Although she is moving closer to home, we are confident we will continue to see her as she joins one of our fellow EREA schools.

Thank you, Ms Janes, for everything you have given to our community. Farewell and best wishes for the future.

Farewell Mr Stollery

At the end of 2026, we will bid farewell to another significant member of our College community, Mr Phil Stollery, who has been part of St Pius X College since 2002. Over more than two decades, Mr Stollery has made an outstanding contribution to the academic, spiritual, and personal development of our students.

In the classroom, Mr Stollery has been a respected teacher of Mathematics and Religious Education, bringing clarity, depth, and enthusiasm to his lessons. Beyond academics, his pastoral leadership across a variety of year groups has provided guidance and care to countless young men, helping them navigate the challenges of school life with confidence and integrity.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Mr Stollery’s service has been his commitment to Outdoor Education. His passion for the outdoors and his expertise in hiking, particularly during the iconic Snowy Hike, have been instrumental in shaping memorable experiences for our students. These programs have not only taught practical skills but also resilience, teamwork, and respect for nature, values that will stay with our students for life.

Mr Stollery’s dedication and loyalty to the St Pius X community have been unwavering. His calm presence, generosity of spirit, and commitment to holistic education have left a lasting legacy. As he moves into retirement, we know his focus will turn to supporting his family and enjoying the next chapter of life.

On behalf of the entire College, thank you, Mr Stollery, for your remarkable service and the positive impact you have had on generations of students. We wish you every success and happiness in the years ahead.

Twilight Concert Brings Christmas Cheer

Although Friday’s weather didn’t cooperate, the spirit of the season shone brightly at our Twilight Concert! The evening was filled with joy as our talented performers treated us to a delightful array of Christmas songs that warmed hearts and lifted spirits.

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the elements to join us, and to our incredible Performing Arts Department for their creativity, passion, and dedication. Their commitment to excellence continues to raise the bar and make events like this truly special.

The Twilight Concert was more than just music it was a celebration of community, togetherness, and the magic of Christmas. Though I was unable to be there, I am confident that as the melodies filled the air, they reminded all who attended of the hope and joy this season brings. We look forward to many more opportunities to share in this festive spirit with you all.
