LITERACY

Reading & Writing

This term, our Grade 3/4s are delving into a new class serial read, Meet Marly.

Meet Marly is a text about a girl who migrates to Australia from Vietnam. This text links well with our Unit of Work 'The Cultural Iceberg'.

We encourage students to continue picking 'Just Right Books' and to read these daily at home if possible. Asking your child questions about their book is a great way to deepen their understanding of the texts they are reading.

In Reading, students will be focusing on:

  • Spelling decodable and non-decodable High Frequency Words
  • Reading fluently
  • Building background knowledge
  • Expanding on and learning new vocabulary
  • Deepening their comprehension skills

This term in Writing, our Grade 3/4s will be exploring narratives and persuasive texts. Students will be expected to follow the stages of writing to produce published pieces of writing. Handwriting practice will also be an ongoing focus for students this term.

In Writing,  students will be learning to:

  • Organise texts using appropriate text structure and features and discuss why these features were chosen and their purpose
  • Edit for spelling and the correct use of a range of punctuation depending on the purpose e.g. exclamation marks, quotation marks, ellipses
  • Identify misspelt words in their writing and use a range of strategies and resources to make corrections e.g. Knowledge of common spelling patterns, word families, dictionaries and word lists
