Level 6

Level  6

Maths

Over the last two weeks, students have been exploring Place Value. We have been investigating the properties of numbers and identifying whether they are odd or even and prime or composite, as well as demonstrating their understanding of factors and multiples. We have begun exploring square and triangular numbers to further our understanding of number.

Writing

Throughout writing, students have been developing their questioning skills. We have worked through the writing process to research, plan, draft and edit and revise a biography of a friend. Students have enjoyed interviewing their friends, using their iPads as voice recorders. Recording the interview, allowed the students to refer back to the interview when drafting their biography. Students then helped each other revise their work to ensure the information was a true and accurate reflection of their friend. It has been lovely to watch the students work collaboratively during this writing task.

Reading

This week, Level 6 students have been focusing on identifying the main idea of a text. We have been able to discuss the how to find the main idea and to give reasons why this is the main idea. Students have been given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills using a variety of text types (books, video, pictures). They have been working on sharing their opinions and having their peers add to their ideas or disagree with them in a class discussion about a text. Students have done this in a respectful way to challenge their peers understanding of a text.

Throughout these lessons, we have used books looking into the Australian History of British settlement from the perspective of Indigenous Australians. The Inquiry throughline for this term is belonging, with a large focus on how we belong and how it has changed across the years.

Inquiry

In addition to our reading lessons, students have had the opportunity to investigate how Australia has changed over the years and how these changes have impacted, positively and negatively, our feeling of belonging to our country.

Buddies

This week Level 6 and Foundation students have begun the Buddies Program. Students have enjoyed meeting their Buddies and their class. We have used these sessions as get to know you sessions. It has been so lovely watching the Level 6 students shine in their leadership role to help their Foundation buddies.
