2024 classes and staff

Class formation

As a public school, our doors are open to any child who lives in our catchment area. Therefore our numbers are not capped for year groups. When planning staffing and classes at the end of each year, we do our very best to ensure classes are tentatively formed. However over the holidays, and the first couple of days of school, we can receive new enrolments that can change our end of year plans. Over the holidays we did receive new enrolments, which is absolutely wonderful, and these additions must be factored in to the final classes. This is why we do not share the teachers and classes at the end of the year...best laid plans can, and often do, change things.

All NSW Department of Education Schools are staffed based upon a formula where each grade is designated a number and then that number is multiplied by the number of children, resulting in a total number. This determines the number of class teachers we are allocated as a school. We must 'fit' the children into those classes. Often parents ask why we have composite classes (1/2, 3/4, 5/6) or these composite classes are across a stage (K/1, 2/3 or 4/5). It is based upon the staffing formula and as a school we have to work within that final number. Therefore, each year there can be a different number of students in each grade, necessitating a different class structure.

Teachers spend hours at the end of the year looking at the formation of classes and a number of factors are discussed, such as:

~  a balanced distribution of student’s abilities and genders across classes

~ needs of individual students, these may be social, intellectual, emotional or physical

~ student relationships and social cohesion

~ allocating students to a particular class, not to a teacher.

During the Parent Information Evening the stage teams will be providing further information on how we cater for composite, and cross stage classes. Our teachers are very familiar with teaching stage based classes and are able to plan and program for the different needs of students, regardless of the mixture of grade or stage.
