VCE and VCE VM Pathways and VET Studies

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

Overview: The standard senior secondary qualification in Victoria, ideal for academically focused students aiming for an ATAR and direct entry to university. It comprises of at least 16units of study.

Learning Style: Classroom-based learning, internal school assessments, plus external exams for Units 3/4.

Outcomes: ATAR eligibility; strong preparation for university via scored subject results.·

VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM)

Overview: This a two‑year applied learning program within the VCE, designed for those who thrive on hands‑on work and real‑world context rather than traditional exams

Assessment: All core subjects are internally assessed by teachers.

Why Choose VCE VM: Suits students not seeking an ATAR but wanting clear training and employability skills. It provides pathways into apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE, employment, or future university via alternative entry.

VET Studies within VCE or VCE VM

Overview: Offers Vocational Education & Training (VET) qualifications, typically Certificate II or III embedded within either the standard VCE, or VCE VM.

Why Each Pathway Matters

VCE remains the traditional route for university aspirations.

VCE VM is a transformative alternative: students still earn the VCE, but through integrated, real-world learning, and with no external exams, if ATAR is not needed. Excellent for early career focus.

VET qualifications in any pathway give a head start in industries from hospitality and engineering to health and business with nationally recognised certificates and valuable workplace experience.
