Wellbeing and Inclusion

On Friday our staff took part in a Curriculum Day focused on Day 2 of the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) training, centred on ‘Relationships’. This professional learning supports us in building strong, positive connections with our students and each other.

We look forward to continuing to implement BSEM strategies in our teaching and learning at Lucas Primary School to support student engagement, wellbeing and success.

In Relationship, students are taught skills for building nurturing relationships. Students learn about active constructive responding, student advocacy and empowerment and strategies for repairing relationships after ruptures.

Purpose of the Relationship Domain

Foundation of the Model: The Relationship domain serves as the anchor for all other BSEM domains, recognizing that students need strong relational foundations to engage with the curriculum.

Promotes Learning: Strong relationships create a safe and supportive environment, making students more receptive to learning and willing to put forth their best effort.

Supports Self-Regulation: By providing co-regulatory supports and demonstrating presence and warmth, teachers help students manage stress and develop greater self-regulation.

Key Strategies and Practices

Unconditional Positive Regard: Communicating genuine acceptance and support for students, regardless of their challenges.

Attachment and Presence: Teachers showing up for students in times of need, fostering a sense of security and connection.
